Industry Analysis and Corporate Strategy

Industry Analysis and Corporate Strategy Studies is a small-group activity in which teams of participants formulate corporate strategic policy, giving consideration to global issues. Participants develop and defend a strategic plan for a specific company in a given industry. The residence session held abroad fosters an international perspective.

Syllabus .(revised 11/2000) When you click on Syllabus, you will be asked whether you want to save the word document on your hard drive (the Save As... option) or whether you wish to  view the syllabus on-screen (the Pick App.... option).  If you choose the former, be sure to remember where you saved it to on your C drive.  If you choose the latter option, you will see a screen with a browse button.  Click on the browse button and locate your winword.exe file on your C: drive.  Click open and you should be able to see the syllabus on screen.

Class Roster. The class roster allows students, groups, and professors to interact with each other via email.  The roster contains pictures scanned from the EMBA photo book.

Getting Started Bobst Library,  This provides a list of business resources available at Bobst. Intranet Access to Dow Jones News Retrieval, Disclosure, Investext, Lexis-Nexis, Worldscope. 

You must use the computer labs in Stern to access these databases via the Internet.  You can download the 10Ks in spreadsheet format.

Industry Analysis and Management Growth Strategies Wall St Research Network . To find out industry and/or company information, you can either explore their homepage or click on Research a Company and then choose a stock in a particular industry.  For a particular stock, WSRN will give you links to industry information on the web including trade associations.  WSRN also contains links to Edgar where you can obtain 10Ks.

Finance Data: Stern Research Data Sets (srds) - Use Compustat Option to obtain balance sheet and income statement information on a company.  Use CRSP Option to obtain monthly or daily stock returns and also returns on stock and bond indices. Use Basic Economics option to obtain time series of various economic data.

How to Use Bloomberg. The Bloomberg machines are located on the 5th floor of MEC.  Bloomberg has news, financial statements, and analysts estimates of growth in addition to other types of financial information. 

How to Use Lexis-Nexis. Lexis-Nexis is located in the graduate computer labs on designated machines.  It has information on news, financial statements, trade journals, patents, and legal aspects. 

How to Use Research Databases at Stern.  This handout in Adobe Acrobat format (pdf) contains general instructions on how to use the Stern Research Data Sets (srds).

Investext (CD-Rom).  Contains analysts reports on companies and industries. 

Disclosure (CD-Rom).  Contains the balance sheet and income statements of most major companies. 

Infotrac (CD-Rom).  Contains general company and industry information. 

Predicast F&S (CD-Rom) 
Contains company and industry information as well as detailed product information

Wall Street Transcript (microfiche).  Each issue of the Transcript focuses on a particular industry and includes analysis of companies in the industry and an analysis of the management of each firm.
