Notes on Compensation
There is a strict limit of 2 positions (or 20 hours/week) per fall & spring semester. There is a strict limit of 1.0 position during the Winter Intersession and the 3rd summer module. A student may hold one or more positions in a term or module as long as the commitment is for no more than an average of 20 hours per week (e.g., 2 full TF or GF positions in the Fall, 2 half TF positions during the Winter Intensive module, 1 full TF position during Summer 2, etc.). A student may hold as many as 3 grader positions per semester, as long as the 20 hours per week average is not exceeded.
Faculty members are responsible for the quality of the students they hire and for overseeing the quality of their work.
Please note that if a student is released from a position or decides to leave that position prior to the end of the term, the amount of his/her compensation is prorated. See below for more information on releasing TFs.
Faculty members may use their STARS accounts to pay for eligible TFs, graders, and tutors over and above amounts paid for by Stern.
TFs, Graders and Tutors will be charged to an individual faculty member’s STARS allocation if the class size does not meet the minimum enrollment or if a faculty member wants to pay more than $24 per student for graders and tutors.
Faculty may hire non-Stern graduate students as TFs only in the event that they are unable to hire Stern students with the appropriate background. (Dean's Office approval is required.) Non-Stern TFs are paid by check.
Compensation for Undergraduate Students
$1,250 for a half position (5 hours/week for fall & spring)
$2,500 for a full position (10 hours/week for fall & spring)

Policy for Releasing TFs from Contractual Obligations
If, for whatever reason,a professor wants to release his or her TF from the position, the following policies and procedures apply: Agreement
- Both the professor and student must discuss the issue and agree to dissolve the contract.
Payment
If it is decided that the TF is released from the position, the professor and student must come to an agreement regarding payment.
Generally, payment is prorated by the number of weeks worked. For example, if a TF has a salary of $3,600 and the semester is 15 weeks long, the weekly rate is $240. If the TF has worked 4 out of 15 weeks, he or she would be paid $960.
However, the prorated amount can differ from this formula, as long as the professor and student agree on this new amount.
Students receiving TUITION REMISSION will have the partial credit removed from their account. The department’s Administrative Coordinator should contact Katherine King to inform her of the amount and she will provide the updated information to Financial Aid.
Students receiving a check from PAYROLL will simply receive a reduced amount of paychecks. The department’s Administrative Coordinator should contact Pauline Braz regarding the amount already disbursed (note: several smaller paychecks to TFs are disbursed throughout the semester; TF salaries are not paid in one check.) and then inform Richard Upchurch of the updated amount.
Hiring
The remaining funds from the prorated salary can be used to hire another Teaching Fellow.
If a Faculty member would like to pay the replacement TF more than the balance, these funds would have to come out of the Faculty member’s STARS account and would be paid to the student via a check from Payroll, which is subject to taxes.
Please contact Richard Upchurch for any questions regarding this policy.
