Generally, three credit courses taught during the day meet twice a week for a total of two hours and 40 minutes. All three-credit classes meet 13 weeks plus the final examination. Half semester classes are 1.5 credits and generally meet for half the term or less; please consult the course schedule section for the specific variations. (For evening/weekend class meeting times, see below.)
Fall Modules: Generally, classes meet once a week for twelve weeks. Class times are 6:00pm to 9:00pm on weekdays and on weekends from 9:00am to 12:00pm or 1:00pm to 4:00pm. In addition, Fall is divided into two modules: Fall 1 (September - October) and Fall 2 (November – December). Please note that a 1.5 credit class will be entirely contained within a module and will not overlap between the modules.
Spring Modules: Generally, classes meet once a week for twelve weeks. Class times are 6:00pm to 9:00pm on weekdays and on weekends from 9:00am to 12:00pm or 1:00pm to 4:00pm. Intensive Module Courses: Winter (January-February) and Late Summer (August-September) For information regarding the Intensive Module courses, please view the MBA Academics Affairs website.
Interarea Courses: (course designator INTA-GB) are those courses that are offered jointly by more than one area and can count toward any one of the majors or specializations designated for that course (if you make the request through your academic advising office). Only one interarea course with a nonmajor designator may be applied to any one major or specialization. If arrangements are not made to have an Interarea course applied towards a major or specialization, the credit will count towards elective credits.
Independent Studies: can be 1.5 or 3 credits, depending on the workload. However, the maximum number of credits from all independent studies should not exceed 3 credits for any given student. Upon approval by the department chair, the faculty must forward the Independent Study Authorization form to the Office of Records & Registration, Attention: Michael Umbay, 44 West 4th Street, Suite 6-100, NY, NY 10012.
NOTE: Independent studies are for Stern MBA students only.
Swing Courses: may count towards the department that offers the course, or it may count towards another pre-approved department. You must make a request through your academic advising office if you plan on swinging a course. Please keep in mind that only one Swing course can be applied towards any particular major or specialization. If you have any questions about how these courses work, please feel free to meet with an advisor. A list of the swing and interarea courses can be viewed on-line.
Professional Responsibility Courses: Langone Program students must complete or waive all Langone core courses before registering for COR2-GB.3101. Full-time students must take their professional responsibility class in their third or fourth term.
Finance Topics Courses: should be chosen wisely. You may take only one section of a specific Finance Topics course number toward any degree. For example, you may take one section of FINC-GB.3160 and one section of FINC-GB.3176 in the Fall, but you may not take FINC-GB.3160 or FINC-GB.3176 again in the Spring, even if the sections and topics are different.
