International Volunteers
Make a Global Impact!
The Stern International Volunteers was founded in 2007 as an international community service experience designed to bring Stern’s 4-course Social Impact Core to life. Its successful launch in January 2008 brought a small group of students to San Carlos, Costa Rica, where they worked on an infrastructure project painting an elementary school. Due to the program's success, it changed location and expanded in both size and scope in the coming years - 20 students traveled to Peru in 2010 and 21 students traveled to Peru in 2011. Each year, students and chaperones worked hand-in-hand with the local communities to support the needs of the elderly, orphans and child laborers.
Also for the first time in 2010, student volunteers took a 2-credit pass/fail discussion-based course. The overall objective of the course is to explore how business can create 'shared value' for the world's 'bottom billion' and focuses on:
- identifying the root causes of poverty from a global perspective;
- considering a variety of concepts and practices relevant to the creation of shared value;
- engaging in experiential learning, including the service trip to Peru.
Program Goals
Through involvement in the program, we aspire to:
- broaden students’ understanding of the world and its economic disparities;
- deepen students’ commitment to community service;
- heighten students’ social and inter-cultural awareness; and
- influence students’ perspectives on the world as they become future business leaders.
Eligibility
Eligible applicants are current, matriculated NYU Stern undergraduate freshmen, sophomores and juniors who will be based in New York City during the course term and throughout the service trip's entirety. (Seniors are not eligible because the spring service trip extends past graduation.)
