Social Entrepreneurship
Sabira Lakhani, Stern Class of 2012 and NYU Reynolds Scholar, is working towards an understanding of social finance and investment: identifying the intricacies of social capital, measuring impact, and balancing missions and returns. As a Reynolds Scholar, she is working towards creating a sustainable and scalable social venture to contribute to the waste management infrastructure in developing urban India. Her goal is to significantly improve the triple-bottom line impacts of garbage and waste on India's population.
Social Entrepreneurs boldly approach and imaginatively address some of society’s most intractable problems. With a primary focus on high social returns, these individuals work across sectors - in private businesses, nonprofit organizations, and within governments - to leverage intellectual, social, and financial capital resources to innovate in and have an enduring, positive impact on areas such as poverty alleviation, access to healthcare, literacy promotion, and environmental sustainability.
Stern and NYU offer both curricular and co-curricular social entrepreneurial activities:
- Stern/Wagner Social Entrepreneurship Minor - Students who participate in this minor will engage in a carefully chosen selection of Wagner and Stern course options that explore the concept of social entrepreneurs as “changemakers.”
- NYU Reynolds Program in Social Entrepreneurship - Each year, Stern undergraduate sophomores apply for a coveted Scholars spot in the NYU Reynolds Program in Social Entrepreneurship.
- NYU Reynolds/Youth Venture Be a Changemaker Challenge – All NYU undergraduate students are eligible to compete for $1,000 seed grants and a $20,000 grand prize to launch or expand a social venture in this annual challenge.
- Berkley Center for Entrepreneurial Studies - established in 1983, the Berkley Center for Entrepreneurial Studies' mission is to nurture the entrepreneurial spirit and talent at NYU Stern.
