Overview

Business & Environment at Stern (BES) was initiated in the Fall of 1999 to coordinate and advance the various research and teaching efforts at the Stern School in the area of business and environment. BES is intended to help coordinate and support this research, provide teaching services and teaching materials, and provide public outreach.

BES faculty recognize that an imperative of business is to make money.  Thus we seek to understand when business strategies and actions can improve both environmental and financial performance. BES research has several tracks. Faculty seek to understand why win-win opportunities exist, why they have been missed, and what characteristics allow firms to benefit from such opportunities. Faculty seek to understand how managers can best guide companies in gaining both financial and environmental advantage. Finally, BES researchers seek to understand how firms can change the competitive playing field to allow both better financial performance and better environmental protection.
