Communication Strategies: Developing Leadership Presence

The demand for excellent communication is a constant for any professional.  But, what is excellent communication?  The expectations of audiences and the need for instant feedback have changed the communication dynamic executives face each day.  A communication strategy is as important as a business strategy and creating one requires a deeper look into questions such as these:

  • Is the intent of my message clearly reaching my stakeholders?
  • Does my communication style support my personal brand as a leader?
  • Am I projecting the level of trust and credibility my listeners expect?
  • Are my messages consistent across multiple platforms? Media?  Cultures? Generations?
  • What do listeners take away from my speeches?  Have I made it easy for them to remember?

As a leader, your words are going to be repeated, broadcast, commented on and critiqued. Every message you deliver could be a real opportunity for you and your firm.  Enhancing your communication strategies and skills will help you deliver more powerful statements across multiple stakeholder groups and multiple platforms.    

In this advanced communication program, you will learn key techniques for creating communication strategies that support your personal brand.  You will practice developing and delivering well-crafted and concise messages that have clearly defined intents.  With three videotaped presentations, you will receive feedback from faculty and peers and learn how to use this feedback to enhance your communication style.   You will also deepen the connection with your audience and engage with them in a more authentic manner.  The skills and strategies in this program will provide the tools to empower you to enhance your leadership presence, build trust with your key constituents and create more memorable and effective communications.

Program Faculty

Susan Stehlik

Susan Stehlik is a Clinical Associate Professor of Management Communication at NYU Stern School of Business.  Professor Stehlik is also CEO of Prime Time Ideas, Inc., a management training and consulting company she founded in 1997. Projects have focused on effective communication strategies for performance, resource management, and personal presence as well as critical interventions. Her portfolio of specialties includes diversity and leadership training, executive coaching, legal and ethical investigations; as well as work with Emotional Intelligence, and core communication skills. David Purdy

David Purdy is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Management Communications at New York University Stern School of Business. Professor Purdy currently teaches communication, collaboration and leadership skills at NYU Stern, Fordham University and Baruch College. He has also taught Integrated Marketing Communications, which encompasses advertising, public relations and social media, for the State University of New York. He trains corporate clients through the American Management Association and his own firm, Big Blue Soapbox, offering communication, planning and mediation skills training for corporations and entrepreneurs. Professor Purdy combines more than 20 years of experience in business and the arts, with a life-long love of technology, to help people communicate more effectively both in person and online. Aline Wolff

Aline Wolff is a Clinical Associate Professor of Management Communication at New York University Stern School of Business. She teaches courses in organizational communication for the undergraduates, the master students, and for executive development programs.

Professor Wolff has been with NYU Stern since 1994. Her primary research areas include self-managed teams, communication theory in the workplace, and cross-cultural communication. In addition to her work at NYU Stern, Professor Wolff has taught at SUNY Purchase, Richmond College, College of New Rochelle, and City University of New York. Before joining NYU Stern, she worked for ten years on Wall Street, at Citibank and Goldman Sachs and Co. Read her full bio

Jeffrey Younger

Jeffrey J. Younger joined New York University Stern School of Business as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Management Communication in September 2007. Professor Younger specializes in business writing, public speaking, team dynamics and critical thinking and has worked for more than 26 years in the field of entertainment, media and corporate communications. Structuring Presentations for Maximum Effectiveness

1st Taped Presentation and Feedback: Current Business Challenge

  • Task: Two- to three-minute taped presentation on current business challenge or project

Presentation 2.0: Upgrading Your Presentation Technique

  • Understand your non-verbal cues, vocal strength, body language and personal energy to upgrade your presentation and communication skills
  • Techniques for more effective delivery

  • Task: One-minute elevator presentation summarizing a longer prepared speech for a large diverse audience
