Taking Stock of Utilitarianism

The lecture will develop an account of utilitarianism based on central writings of the classical utilitarians. It will then consider the success or otherwise of various types of argument for the view, and conclude with a brief examination of the prospects for utilitarianism.

Biography and Publications

ROGER CRISP is Uehiro Fellow and Tutor in Philosophy at St Anne’s College, Oxford, and Professor of Moral Philosophy at the University of Oxford.

He was editor of Utilitas between 1997 and 2005. He is the author of Mill on Utilitarianism (1997) and Reasons and the Good (2006), and is currently working on a book on Henry Sidgwick’s Methods of Ethics.

He has edited the Oxford Handbook of the History of Ethics, which should appear within a few months.
