Jonathan Haidt
The Business & Society Program Area welcomes Jonathan Haidt as the Kaufman Visiting Professor of Business Ethics for 2011-2012. Jonathan is a professor in the Social Psychology area of the Department of Psychology at the University of Virginia and the author of the The Happiness Hypothesis (2007). Professor Haidt studies morality and emotion, and how they vary across cultures. He is also active in positive psychology (the scientific study of human flourishing) and study positive emotions such as moral elevation, admiration, and awe.
According to Haidt, "My research these days focuses on the moral foundations of politics, and on ways to transcend the “culture wars” by using recent discoveries in moral psychology to foster more civil forms of politics. Morality, by its very nature, makes it hard to study morality. It binds people together into teams that seek victory, not truth. It closes hearts and minds to opponents even as it makes cooperation and decency possible within groups."
At Stern Haidt will try to integrate research on moral psychology with research and theory in business ethics. In particular his year-long project will seek the best ways to apply behavioral science research to create organizations that function as ethical systems, with only minimal need for directly teaching or training people to behave ethically. See his project at www.EthicalSystems.org. And take an eye-opening quiz about your own morals at YourMorals.org.
