Ireland Bank Governor Philip Lane body

The NYU Stern Center for Global Economy and Business hosted a public talk with Philip Lane, Governor of the Central Bank of Ireland on September 27, 2016. Professor Kim Schoenholtz moderated the discussion, followed by a Q&A with faculty and students.

Governor Lane presented an overview of the Euro area's current economic outlook and monetary policy. He emphasized that low interest rates are the quickest way to “renormalize” policy rates: “... forceful accommodative monetary policy in the short run is the best method that policy rates do not stay low for longer than is necessary.” Governor Lane also tackled pressing topics including Brexit, where he stated that the economic impact of the UK withdrawing from the European Union is set to be “negative and material.”
