NYU School of Medicine and NYU Stern School of Business Jointly Offer MD/MBA Dual Degree Option

Future physician leaders will prepare to manage both the business of medicine and patient care through our new MD/MBA dual degree program with NYU’s School of Medicine.

md/mba dual degree announcement

A changing healthcare environment increasingly requires physician leaders to manage the business of medicine as part of patient care.

With an increasing demand on physicians to manage both patient care and the business of medicine, NYU School of Medicine and NYU Stern School of Business now offer an MD/Master of Business Administration (MBA) dual degree program in which students can complete both degrees within five years to pursue a combination of interests during their medical education.

“We are thrilled to introduce our new MD/MBA dual degree program and offer our students yet another individualized learning pathway,” said Steven Abramson, MD, senior vice president and vice dean for education, faculty and academic affairs, NYU School of Medicine. “Our growing dual degree program provides our students with a variety of options to tailor their degree to suit their educational needs and to help prepare them to succeed as future physician leaders in many different settings.”

Students enrolled in the immersive MD/MBA program begin at NYU School of Medicine on a full-time basis for the first three years. They spend the summer of the third year through the spring semester of the fourth year at NYU Stern to pursue MBA coursework. Students return to the medical school for the summer and fall of the fifth year, followed by a final semester at NYU Stern in the spring of the fifth year.

“A changing healthcare environment increasingly requires physician leaders to manage the business of medicine as part of patient care,” said Peter Henry, dean, NYU Stern School of Business. “Our new dual degree program will provide aspiring physicians with the interdisciplinary perspective, business skills and medical expertise to shape the future of healthcare.”

The program is open to prospective students, who may apply concurrently to medical school and business school, and to currently matriculated students in the NYU School of Medicine’s C21 curriculum. Each NYU school manages its own admissions process, and interested candidates must complete separate applications for the MD and MBA programs.

This new dual degree program is part of NYU School of Medicine’s Curriculum for the 21st Century (C21), which is designed to seamlessly integrate the basic and clinical science to bedside application throughout medical school. C21’s spiraling curriculum, earlier direct patient contact, and innovative use of technology create new pathways to teach health sciences. This new program is one of several steps NYU School of Medicine has taken to be at the forefront of transforming medical education in order to best meet the needs of tomorrow's physicians.
