Matthew Mitchell joined New York University Stern School of Business as a Visiting Professor in the Department of Economics in September 2014. He is also a Professor of Business Economics at the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto.

Professor Mitchell's research focuses on the economics of innovation, incentive contracts and industrial organization. His papers have studied diverse problems including the sources of income inequality, the optimal structure of patents as a reward for innovation, and how unemployment insurance can encourage job searching. He is currently an Associate Editor at the American Economic Review and the Journal of Economic Theory.

Prior to joining the University of Toronto, Professor Mitchell was on faculty at the University of Minnesota and the University of Iowa.

Professor Mitchell earned a B.S. in Economics from Pennsylvania State University and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Rochester.
