Data Center Move - Spring 2008Stern IT is currently planning the relocation of our current LC data center. See our Data Center Move page for more information. Pilot Projects
Stern IT is actively looking for ways to integrate new technology into our learning and working environment to enhance knowledge creation and increase efficiency. Through pilot projects, we are able to learn the impact of new tools by first using them for a period of six to twelve months. If the outcome of the pilot is successful, we roll out the project to the entire community. New Help Desk Ticket Tracking System Stern IT has partnered with central NYU's ITS (Information Technology Services) to move to the Remedy Help Desk Ticket Tracking System. The new system offers increased functionality and better reporting features. One of the new features is a service view website that allows you to enter, view, update, cancel and reopen your own tickets. The new service view website went live on February 14, 2008 and may be accessed at http://helpdesk.stern.nyu.edu. Please share your feedback on the new system with us. Connect@Stern Mail and Calendar The mail migration is nearly complete. Stern students and administrators have moved to the new Connect@stern mail system. Almost all faculty have been migrated and most are using the new system. The old Sun mail system is scheduled to be shut down at the end of March 2008. If you have not yet been migrated, please contact the Helpdesk (998-0180) for assistance. Connect@Stern Calendar: Stern IT is working with groups of Meeting Maker users to begin migrating them to the new Connect@Stern calendar system. Wireless Attendance: We are continuing to pilot the use of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology to take attendance in large classrooms. Testing will continue this semester in KMC 2-60 with classes taught by Professors Backus and Gordon. Student Print Quota Reminder As announced last semester, students have been granted 2000 sheets of free printing per year as part of Stern’s green initiative. Non-Stern students taking Stern classes will be given 200 free sheets per class. Students may view their quota and purchase additional pages using SIMON. For more details, please visit this website. New Wireless Network Stern IT has updated the wireless network. A new management system and new access points from Aruba networks have been installed in all student areas and classrooms. You will notice a different wireless login screen from the black and blue login screen that you are used to seeing. You will be able to login and access Stern’s wireless network the same way you always do. If you experience any wireless problems, please contact the Stern Helpdesk. Power Saving Based on recommendations from the Stern Campus Greening Initiative, all classroom podium computers will be powered down from 10pm-7am. Express email stations will power down after 1 hour of no activity, and printers will automatically go into power-saving mode when not in use. Podiums and public computers may be used at any time by pressing the on button. Printers will return to full-power when a job is sent to them. Stevenson Lab Access As a response to student feedback, the Stevenson computing lab has been reserved for the exclusive use of full-time Stern undergraduate students. Non-Stern students taking Stern courses will have access to the LC11-13-15 computing lab for completing Stern-related course work. Mailing List Spam Reduction We’ve restricted all Stern club and departmental email distribution lists to allow only Stern addresses to send them in order to reduce spam and list misuse. This is an interim measure until we can fully implement the new list management system that will restore the capability of restricting lists to a specific group of allowed senders. Leopard Support Apple has released Mac OS X version 10.5 (Leopard), the most recent version of the Mac operating system. Whenever a new product is released, it takes time for the IT staff to prepare the best support practices. Vendors need time to release compatible applications and drivers. We will begin testing Mac Leopard with all our supported applications to ensure there are no compatibility problems. Stern IT is not able to offer support for Leopard until we have finished testing our applications and services with Leopard. At this time, our print management system does not support Leopard. Notification will be sent when Stern IT is ready to offer Mac Leopard support. Until then, we recommend waiting to upgrade Mac computers to Leopard. Webpage Improvements AIS web pages including biographical information and grades have been updated with a new look and easier navigation. Microsoft Office 2007 Podium and lab computers have been upgraded to Office 2007. Microsoft Office 2007 is available for Faculty, Staff and Stern Administrators. To request an upgrade to Office 2007, please contact the Stern Helpdesk. Please note that the Office 2007 interface and menus differ significantly from Office 2003. CITL (Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning) has prepared a webpage with resources to help those transitioning to Office 2007. Contact CITL at 212-998-0919 or citl@stern.nyu.edu to arrange for Office 2007 training. If you are still using Office 2003, but will be receiving attachments from others using Office 2007, we recommend installing the Microsoft Compatibility pack to allow easy access to Office 2007 files. Remote Access to Software (Apps@Stern) Stern MBA's and Faculty may use Stern-licensed software from any computer that has internet access, without having to install the software on their computer. Apps@stern.nyu.edu will be available for undergraduate students beginning Fall semester 2008. For more information please visit this website. |
