Creating a New Account Profile in Thunderbird

  1. Open up Thunderbird and and click on Tools->Account Settings. You should see the following window:
  2. Click on the Add Account… button to continue. You should now see the following dialog box:
  3. Select the Email account radio button and click Next to continue.
  4. The following dialog box should now appear:

    Type in your name and your email address and click Next to continue.
  5. The following dialog box should now appear:

    If you are using IMAP as your incoming mail server protocol, then select the IMAP radio button and enter in connect-imap.stern.nyu.edu as the incoming server. Click Next to continue.

    If you are using POP as your incoming mail server protocol, then select the POP radio button, enter in connect-pop3.stern.nyu.edu as the incoming server, and (VERY IMPORTANT) unselect the checkbox next to Use Global Inbox (store mail in Local Folders) as shown below, particularly if you already have a POP3 account:


    Click Next to continue.
  6. The following dialog box will appear:


    The incoming user name is the same as your user name on the old system. Type it in and click Next to continue.
  7. The following dialog box will appear next:


    Give it a descriptive name (e.g., Connect@Stern) and click Next to continue.
  8. Click Finish at the box that appears next and OK at the screen after that to complete the process. At this point you should now see two accounts in the left pane in Thunderbird:
  9. Click on the Inbox under the new account and, when prompted to enter a password, type in your current account password.

Subscribing to IMAP Folders in Thunderbird

After your account has been migrated and you have created a new IMAP account profile in Thunderbird, you may not see all of your IMAP folders even through all have been migrated to the new system. In order to make them viewable in Thunderbird, you will need to re-subscribe to them. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. In Thunderbird, select any folder under your new account profile.
  2. Click on File->Subscribe. You should now see a window that looks like the following:

To subscribe to all of the folders at once, hold down the Shift key, scroll down until you reach the end using the mouse and click on the last folder. All of your top-level IMAP folders should now be selected. Click the Subscribe button on the right to subscribe to the folders.

Please note that if you have nested folders (i.e., folders within folders), you will need to expand each parent folder and subscribe to the nested folders using the procedure described above.
