Messaging FAQs
- What email
client software does this new system support?
The connect@stern system supports full email functions for
any IMAP/POP email clients (as opposed to web browser client).
However for full email and calendar integration you will
need to use Microsoft Outlook.
- What email clients does Stern helpdesk provide
support for?
Stern IT will continue to provide full email support
for Microsoft Outlook 2003 and Mozilla
Thunderbird and limited support for Eudora and Apple
Mail. Support for Microsoft Outlook 2007 will be coming soon, once our vendor releases a connector for the new Outlook.
- What if I want to use a different program than what
Stern helpdesk supports?
Stern IT can provide the basic email connection information.
If your email application requires more or different
information please contact our Stern Helpdesk to see
if we can provide for such a request.
- What is
meant by listing email "by conversation" in connect@stern's
web client?
- "by conversation" refers to a choice of how
you VIEW your email. First you will notice that when
you pick this option you see a full screen of email
message headers. When you click on an email header the
full email message opens up on the right side with a
top right window showing all messages related to the
conversation.
- "by message", an alternate VIEW of your email,
you will see the a window on the top right with similar
headers and a window on the bottom right with the full
email message you have selected. Very similar to most
email applications.
- What integrated
email/calendar software does it support?
MS Outlook 2003: connect@stern is an integrated email and calender
system. It supports Microsoft Outlook 2003 via a connector
plug-in, which allows your computer to sync with connect@stern's
calendar system.
- What is my new email
quota? Each new connect@stern email account will
be allocated 1 GB of storage, an increase from the current
150 MB.
- I
was approved to have more than 1GB space due to my multiple
job responsibilities on the old system, will I get the same
quota on the new system?
If you were approved to have additional space due to
multiple responsibilities or approved by the respective
vice dean, then that quota size will be the same you will
receive on the new system.
Note: After all the migration and the
system is performance tuned, we will be planning of providing
additional space for a yearly charge.
- I see a bit more
of spam than before, why is that?
In the migration to our new system, one of the peripheral
systems that needed to be moved was the mailing lists.
The old mailing lists were only open to few users who
were authorized to send to that mailing list. The new
system currently has it open (i.e. anyone in that list
can send to the entire list). Due to this some spam that
slips in to the centralized spam filter, and hits a mailing
list will get distributed to the entire mailing list (as
it is open to all).
- Will this be fixed?
Yes, we are developing a new mailing list manager
and once that is implemented, you will see less spam.
We are sorry for the inconvenience this is causing
you.
- I am
a user of the email client Thunderbird, MS Outlook or Eudora,
what do I have to do?
We have created on-line How-To
Guides to assist you after your migration.
- What
if I see a discrepancy from my old system to the new system?
Who should I call?
If you are experiencing any problems or issues after
the migration please contact your Stern
IT Help Desk, 212-998-0810.
- How do I get my email
message to appear in a new window?
The ability to open up messages in a new window depends
on which view you are utilizing to view mail Message view
versus Conversation view. If you are in Message view mode,
select the message and click the Detach button on the top
menu bar (next to the Junk button) to open the message in
a separate window. When in Conversation view it is not possible
to open messages in a separate window.
In either view, it is not possible to open up a message
in a new window by double-clicking on it.
- I am using Safari to check my connect@stern email, do I need to do anything special?
If you are using Safari, be sure to click on the link below the login box to switch to "basic mode." Safari will only work with Connect in basic mode.
