Graduating Students
Answers to frequently asked questions regarding your
Stern accounts.
E-mail Accounts:
When does my e-mail account expire?
For Jan 2008 and May 2008 graduates, your Stern NetID based e-mail
account expires on December 31, 2008. You will receive an e-mail notice
before accounts are expired. It is recommended that you sign up for
e-mail forwarding for life through SWAP.
Your Stern e-mail address will not remain active or forward mail beyond
December 31, 2008.
How do I inform people of my new address?
We recommend that you use SIMON's vacation message option to set-up an auto-reply annoucement letting your correspondents know that your Stern account will soon expire and to provide your new address.
What are my options afterwards?
Stern's SWAP service provides e-mail forwarding for life to any email address you choose, work or personal.
How can I forward my messages to a new account?
Visit http://www.stern.nyu.edu/Alumni/ or http://alumnionline.stern.nyu.edu/ for e-mail forwarding for life through SWAP. You can forward mail sent
to your Stern account using SIMON, but SIMON forwarding will only be
effective until December 31, 2008.
If I forward my mail, will I have access to my saved messages?
You will have full email account access, including saved messages
and address books, etc. until December 31, 2008. After this time, you
will not have access to any saved messages, address books, etc.
I need my saved messages. Without forwarding each individually, how
can I keep all of these messages?
We recommend that students back-up saved mail, address books, etc. that
they wish to keep. For information on how to back-up your mail and address
books to another location, see the How-to-guide
on Mail Archiving.
Can I get a Stern account that lasts forever?
No. However, through SWAP you can have a Stern e-mail address with e-mail forwarding for life.
Novell Accounts:
When do I lose access to Stern workstations?
May 2008 graduates will have Stern Novell accounts and Stern
workstation access, until December 31, 2008. Your Novell network account
allows you to log into the workstations at Stern.
Will I be able to access my H: drive after this?
Once you lose access to the Stern workstations on December 31, 2008, you lose access to your H: and other network spaces. You will not be able to access your data after this date. You should move your data onto a removable medium such as a jumpdrive or USB key, before December 31, 2008. Alternatively, you may use Netstorage to access your H drive contents from home and download the files to your home computer.
When do I lose access to my Web space?
Access to your Sales account, your web space, will also end on December 31, 2008. If you wish to keep your web page or other files stored on your unix space, you must find an alternate host and move your webpage before December 31, 2008. Your webpage may also be backed up to a removable media such as a USB key via secure FTP. For instructions on how to move files from your unix space, please see our web publishing How-to-Guide.
