Stern Account Activation
All new members of the Stern community - students, faculty, staff,
administrators - must first activate their Stern account by going to start.stern.nyu.edu and following
the on-screen instructions, also provided in this how-to-guide.
* If you do not have access to a computer, you may
also activate your account from a Stern workstation, by logging into
Novell using with the username "start" and
password "start". This will bring you directly
to the screen shown below in Step 1.
** If you encounter an error after going through the
on-screen instructions and are unable to logout, hold down the CTRL, ALT, DELETE keys on the keyboard.
You should then be presented with a Logout option.
After logging out, please visit the Stern
IT Helpdesk for assistance.
- Input your NetID and University ID,
both of which can be found on the back of your NYU Card (except for
faculty, administrators, and staff, who will be assigned a different
NetID). Input your birth date in YYYY-MM-DD format, and click the "Login" button.

- Enter a Security Question. In the case that you
forget your password, you will be prompted to answer this question
with the answer you provide. Therefore, it is advisable to designate
a question and answer that you can easily remember. Then, provide
a non-Stern email address (such as your NYU email
address) and click "Next Step."

- Enter the password you would like to use for your
account. You must choose a password of at least five characters.

If you would like to change your Stern password, use mail-forwarding
or create a personal email address, you may do so through SIMON.
Visit our SIMON How-to-Guide for further details
and instructions.
