Hermes for Mailing List Users

Hermes is a program written exclusively for the Stern community to facilitate the management of email lists. Access Hermes by going to http://hermes.stern.nyu.edu.

When you first enter Hermes, the menu bar across the top lists five options:

To Search for a list

To search for a list, use either the quick search box or click on Advanced Search from the top menu bar to enter more specific search paramaters. With Advanced Search, you may enter one or more of the following: List Name (e.g. SWIB), List Email Address (e.g. swib_members@stern.nyu.edu), List Description (e.g. Stern Women in Business), List Owner (Net-ID, e.g. jw593), List Member (Net-ID, e.g. jw593), or Allowed Sender (Net-ID, e.g. jw593).

Results will show only public lists and/or lists that you own.

When you click on a list, you will see a summary of the list in the List Details page. On the list details page, you will see the number of List Owners, List Members, List Senders. To view and/or update any of the groups, click on the group title. In the example below, the IT-part-time staff list has 32 members. List owners may add new members, by clicking on members.

Manage Lists

Only the owner of the list has the ability to manage the list. When you click MANAGE LISTS, on the top menu bar, the results will show only lists that you own, and therefore, are allowed to manage.

To add a member, owner or sender, click on the appropriate link from the list details screen. Lists that do not designate Senders will be open to anyone to send to them.

When a list manager adds an owner, member or allowed sender to a list, the change will not take effect for approximately 5 minutes.

Manage Subscriptions

Public lists are lists to which anyone with a Stern account may subscribe.

A Stern user may subscribe or unsubscribe him/herself to a public list, which may be used to send emails for announcements or upcoming events. To subscribe or unsubscribe from a list, login to Hermes and click on Manage Subscriptions from the top menu bar. You will be presented with the lists to which you are eligible to subscribe, and at the bottom, those which you may unsubscribe from. Check the box in front of the list and click the bottom and the bottom to either subscribe or unsubscribe from the selected list(s).

To CREATE LIST

Only IT administrators have the ability to create lists. If you need a new list created, please contact the Helpdesk at 212-998-0180 or via email HelpDesk@stern.nyu.edu. When a new list is created, it will not be active for 24 hours.

To Logout

By clicking LOGOUT, the program will quit and the window will close. If you are using Netscape, we strongly recommend that you close all instance of the browser to completely logout.
