Printing to Stern Printers from Vista Wireless Notebooks

Stern offers students using the wireless network access to shared network printers. Before using these printers students should ensure their notebook meets the following requirements.

Requirements:

• Windows Vista (see other guides for XP or Mac OS)
• Web browser with JavaScript* enabled and
• Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.0 or later

Installation Instructions:

1. In the Control Panel, navigate to the Printer section.

2. Click 'Add Printer'.

3. In the Add Printer window, select 'Add a network, wireless, or Bluetooth printer.'

4. Click the 'The printer that I want isn't listed' button.

5. Select the second option "Select a shared printer by name."

6. In the space underneath that line, you will put in the name of the printer you want; the format will look like
< http://student-printers.stern.nyu.edu/ipps/printername>. For example:

Note: if you receive the error message "couldn't connect to the printer..." at this point in the process, be sure that you have not installed the iprint.exe software on your PC. If you have, you will need to uninstall the iprint software and restart the PC then begin again from step 1 above.

7. The next window will prompt you for the manufacturer and model of the printer. Most Stern printers are made by HP (manufacturer). The models differ slightly, see the table below for a list of the available printers with location and model. For the example printer listed above, where it asks you to select the model, you would choose LaserJet 9050 PCL 5 or LaserJet 9050 PS (either should work). If in doubt, try the HP PCL5 driver as, in our experience, it gives the least problems and errors with Vista.

8. The rest of the printer wizard will ask you to name the printer. You don't have to call it by the Stern name, but it will make it easier to remember which is which if you have more than one Stern printer installed. It may then ask you if you want to print a test page, or if you want it to be the default printer. Answer as desired to complete the printer wizard process.
