Using SIMON
SIMON is Stern's Account Management system. SIMON allows you to see
information about your Stern account, including mail quota information.
SIMON also allows you to change your Stern password and set-up password
recovery options, as well as, set-up a personal address, mail forwarding
and vacation messages.
SIMON is accessible to Stern students, staff, and faculty from any
computer in the Stern complex (lab computer, Intranet / Email station,
office computer) as well as from any remote location. In any web browser,
type in http://simon.stern.nyu.edu/ (from computers on the Stern network,
all you need to type is SIMON). If you have any questions, suggestions,
or problems regarding SIMON, please address them to: helpdesk@stern.nyu.edu.
Use your Stern Net-ID and password to login to SIMON. If you are new
to Stern and have not yet activated your account, please see our account
activation guide.
Once you login, you will see a summary of your Stern mail usage and
account information. From the top menu bar you may choose the following
options: home, change password, mail forwarding, vacation messages,
personal address, password recovery, email usage and Help. From the
left side menu you may use the SIMON directory to search for other members
of the Stern community. The links below provide details on the following
SIMON features:
Home
The first page you will see upon logging into SIMON is the home page.
You may return to the home page at any time by clicking on Home in the
top menu bar. The home page provides a summary of your Stern account,
including email forwarding and vacation message settings, password expiration
and mail disk usage. In addition home provides a list of your day's
calendar activies as well as a quicklink section to provide access to
frequently used application without requiring an additional sign-on
to access those applications.

Spam Digest
Stern provides an optional daily spam digest email with summarizes the messages sent to your account that were stopped by Stern's enterprise spam filter as suspected spam. The digest email also provides the option to recover a message from the spam filter and have it delivered to your inbox. Even without receiving the digest, you may visit spamblock.stern.nyu.edu at any time to search for a potentially blocked message or recover a message.
This option in Simon allow you to choose whether or not you wish to receive the daily spam digest email. To turn the service on or off click the link in the upper right corner of the box.

Change your password
To change your password, click on Change Password from the
top menu bar. Follow the instructions on the following screen and enter
your new password then click submit. You must have at least 8 characters
in your password, which must include at least one letter, one number
and one special characters such as !, @, #, $, %, &, etc..
In keeping with security best practices, Stern IT enforces password changes for all Stern accounts every 6 months. SIMON tells you when your password is scheduled to expire. In addition, you will receive email notifications before your password is scheduled to expire.

To stop the notifications, change your password using SIMON. If you do not change your password before the expiration date, you will not be able to access your Stern email or other web applications until the password is changed. After password expiration, access will be limited to SIMON password functionality until your password has been changed.
Stern faculty, administrators and staff should be aware that after changing your password in SIMON, you may receive a second Windows login prompt the next time you login to your Stern computer. If you see the second login screen, enter your old password and be sure to check the box to sync your Windows password with your network password.

Forward your mail
SIMON allows you to automatically forward email messages sent to your
Stern account to another email account. To forward your mail, click
on Mail Forwarding from the top menu bar.
Enter the email address or addresses you would like your Stern mail
to forward to in the text box. You may enter up to three email addresses
(one in each text box).
If you wish to keep the forwarded mail in your Stern mailbox, click
the check-box below the addresses. If you choose to keep the
mail in your Stern inbox, make sure to clean up your Stern email (especially
your attachments) periodically to avoid going over your 1 GB quota.
Please note that once you reach the quota of 1 GB, you will no longer
be able to receive emails to your Stern account.
Vacation messages
To add a new vacation message, click on Vacation Message from
the top menu bar. Enter the title of your vacation message and the message
content in the text boxes provided and click Save.
To activate the message you must first select that message from the
top drop-down box and then click the Activate button.
You may enter and save more than one vacation message. To delete a
message, select it from the drop down box. Once the message text appears,
click the Delete button below the message text. To edit a message,
select it from the drop down box, the text will appear in the boxes
for you to edit. After editing, click Save to save
the message. Remember, in order for the message to be active, you must
select it from the drop down box and then click the Activate button that appears below.
If you wish to turn off your vacation message please select Turn
Off Vacation from the drop down menu bar.
Personal Address
A firstname.lastname@stern.nyu.edu personal address
is provided as an alternative to your official Stern email address
(NetID@stern.nyu.edu). Messages sent to either address
will be delivered to your Stern inbox.
To request your firstname.lastname@stern.nyu.edu address
click on Personal Address from the top menu bar and
follow the instructions. You must use your full first and last name
as recorded with the Stern registrar (no nicknames/middle names).
After requesting your personal address, you should configure
your "From" settings in Microsoft Outlook or Thunderbird
to match your new address.
In Outlook:
- Under "Tools" select "Email
Accounts" and choose to "View or change existing
accounts."
- Your account name should be listed in the window shown. Select
it and click the "Change..." button.
- Because you will still be required to log into your mail account
with your Stern NetID, only change the fields under User
Information to match your personal email address. Leave
other fields as they are.
In Thunderbird:

Click on "Tools" from
the top menu bar and select "Account Settings"

From the left pane of the next window, select
the account you wish to update

In the right pane you will see a text field for
"Email address" and "Reply
to address", change those fields to reflect your
new personal address.

After making changes, click the OK button at the bottom of the window to return to your mail program.
Searching for other Stern community members
To search for a member of the Stern community, enter the person's name
or NetID in the Directory Search text box located on the left-side menu
bar in SIMON. After entering first and/or last name or NetID, click
on Search. Simon allows partial name searches. You may also search for
member of a department by selecting the relevant department name from
the drop-down menu under the Department Listing heading.
Password Recovery Settings
You may set or change your password recovery options in SIMON. Click
on Password Recovery on the top menu bar and you will
see the following:

Enter an external (non-Stern) email address to which your reset password
can be sent. Enter a security question such as "Place of Birth?"
or Favorite Color?" and then enter the answer to the question in
the box below. Click submit to save the information or changes you have
made to the information.
You will be asked this security question in the event
that you forget your password.
Forgot Password?
Forgot your password? SIMON allows you to recover it using the security
question you set up with your account activation. Simply click the Forgot
Password link on the Simon login page.

You will be taken to the Password Recovery page in which you will be
prompted to enter your Stern NetID, University ID (found on the back
of your NYU Card) and your birthdate in YYYY-MM-DD format.
Finally, you will be prompted with the security question you designated
with your account activation, or in SIMON.
After providing the correct answer, your password will be reset and
a new password will be sent to your designated external (non-Stern)
email address. If you have forgotten your password and have not set-up
the password recovery option, you must contact the helpdesk at helpdesk.stern.nyu.edu
for assistance.
Logout
By clicking Logout in the top right corner of SIMON,
you will be brought back to the Login page.
