Setting up Authenticated SMTP in Thunderbird

Systems that send mail over the Internet use SMTP to send messages from one server to another. The messages can then be retrieved with an e-mail client using either POP or IMAP. Our Thunderbird installation guide provides instructions on how to configure your outgoing and incoming mail servers using IMAP.

On campus, when you are connected to the NYU server from a Stern computer or your own notebook PC via wireless (or using NYU dial-up), the servers are as follows:

Using POP3 Using IMAP
Incoming Mail Server: connect-pop3.stern.nyu.edu Incoming Mail Server: connect-imap.stern.nyu.edu
SMTP Server: smtp.stern.nyu.edu SMTP Server: smtp.stern.nyu.edu

Configuring Thunderbird to use Authenticated SMTP

Stern requires authenicated SMTP. To learn more about authenticated SMTP and why it is required, view the frequently asked questions about authenticated SMTP.

Configuration Steps

1. Open Thunderbird and under the Tools menu select Account Settings...

2. In the menu on the left, highlight Outgoing Server (SMTP) as shown below.

3. The screen on the right side of the window will change to reveal your outgoing mail settings. If your default SMTP is smtp.stern.nyu.edu then highlight it to select and click the Edit button on the right. If your default SMTP is not smtp.stern.nyu.edu, you do not need to follow these instructions. These instructions are only for those using Stern's outgoing mail service (SMTP).

4. Your Server Name should be smtp.stern.nyu.edu. Under "Security and Authentication" check the box to "Use name and password" and enter your login name. Just below that, select "SSL." The Port number above should automatically change from "25" to "465." If it does not change automatically, enter 465 for the port.
