How to Configure Your SMTP Settings

Most e-mail systems that send mail over the Internet use SMTP to send messages from one server to another. The messages can then be retrieved with an e-mail client using either POP or IMAP. For instructions on how to configure your Stern Mail servers via different versions of Outlook, please select our Outlook How-to-Guides from the Email Guides page.

On campus, when you are connected to the NYU server from a Stern computer or your own notebook PC via wireless (or using NYU dial-up), the servers are as follows:

Using POP3 Using IMAP
Incoming Mail Server: connect-pop3.stern.nyu.edu Incoming Mail Server: connect-imap.stern.nyu.edu
SMTP Server: smtp.stern.nyu.edu SMTP Server: smtp.stern.nyu.edu

While we recommend using Stern SMTP, if you are trying to send and receive Stern Mail from off campus, you must configure the settings to match your own Internet Service Provider (ISP), otherwise you may experience problems such as not being able to send mail to outside servers. For example, if you are now accessing the internet through Roadrunner, you will need to use their SMTP. Below are some common New York ISP and their SMTP servers. If you do not see your provider listed below, or if you have any other problems connecting to SMTP, read the materials provided by your ISP, check their website or call their helpdesk to obtain their SMTP information. (For a more extensive list of SMTP servers, click here.

Note: You may also choose to configure Outlook to use Authenticated SMTP, which will allow you to send emails from your Stern account at home without having to change the server name to match your ISP. You will instead have to login to your account with your password once per session. Click here for a How-to-Guide on Setting up Authenticated SMTP in Outlook.

Table of SMTP servers for common Internet Service Providers (ISP)

ISP SMTP Server Name
Time Warner (Roadrunner) smtp-server.nyc.rr.com
AT&T imailhost.worldnet.att.net (DSL)
mailhost.att.net (Dial-up)
BellAtlantic gtei.bellatlantic.net
Comcast smtp.comcast.net
EarthLink smtpauth.earthlink.net
MCI WorldCom mailrelay.mciworld.com
MSN secure.smtp.email.msn.com
Mindspring mail.mindspring.com
Netzero smtp.netzero.net
Optimum Online (CableVision) mail.optonline.net
Prodigy smtp.prodigy.net
Verizon outgoing.verizon.net

AOL users, please see special note.

Special note for Verizon and Earthlink users:

Verizon users must use outgoing server authentication using Verizon ID & password. Note that some clients (Eudora specifically) do not allow this.

Special note for AOL users:

AOL, which is not strictly an Internet Service Provider, does not make SMTP service available to its subscribers. If you use only AOL's built-in email software to send email, then you can still send mail via an online e-mail base (such as NYUHome) instead of using Outlook.
