Stern IT Services for New Students

 

HelpDesk

Stern IT encourages you to always reach out to the HelpDesk for any technical support. The HelpDesk is our frontline for IT and they can offer the most assistance by proactively and effectively addressing your concerns.

Located in Shimkin UC 120 our HelpDesk staff can be reached at 212-998-0180 or HelpDesk@stern.nyu.edu.

Relationship Manager

An integral member of the IT Team is our Student Relationship Manager, Brenda Mitchell. Brenda works closely with students to act as a liaison between the IT Team and the student body. Brenda assists in escalating student ideas and proposals to the appropriate Stern administrators. A new feature of the site is our Stern IT Advisory Page. The Advisory posts updates of planned and unplanned service interruptions. A subscription option is also available for those members of the community who would like to receive email alerts, notifying them of new postings. The advisory page can be a helpful first step in confirming a service disruption.

Accounts

To activate your Stern account please visit http://start.stern.nyu.edu. All Stern students receive a Stern Net ID, providing access to all resources that require username and password (such as Wireless, Express Station access, Printing, Applications, Email, etc.).

Each account provides:
• Email - 1GB of storages space
• Personal File Storage/H: Drive - 1 GB
• Web Space - 1 GB

Note: NYU ITS also allocates an NYU home account address to every student. This account is separate from your Stern account.

Connect@Stern

Email
Stern’s collaborative suite known as Connect@Stern provides integrated email, calendar, tasks and contact capabilities. Each student is given 1 GB of disk space. Connect@Stern can be accessed through a web interface or any email client (Outlook, Thunderbird, etc.). Certain mobile devices are supported as well.

Spam
Stern relies on our anti-spam and anti-virus software to monitor and guard against the attack of spammers. Changing technologies have kept the pursuit challenging but we continue to look for new ways to protect our accounts. Spammers are finding creative ways to sneak through our anti-spam systems to your inbox. Please be sure to forward these messages to is.spam@stern.nyu.edu.

Calendar
The calendar is a significant component of Connect@Stern. Users can create meetings for both personal and school events. With the ability to subscribe to multiple calendars, students can easily schedule new appointments with the suite’s multiple calendar overlay and free/busy look-up feature.


Laptops

All MBA students are required to have a notebook computer (please see laptop policy). The notebook requirement ensures that students will have access to the resources needed to successfully complete Stern's program of study. Stern supports the following models, Dell Latitude E4300, Apple MacBook, Apple MacBook Pro. Please click here for details regarding the Stern recommended standards.

Support for Stern-branded laptops

Stern provides Advanced support for the Stern Dell E4300 and basic support for the Macbooks. Dell loaner laptops will be provided if a Dell laptops must be kept overnight for hardware repair.

Wireless

All students may access Stern’s wireless network. KMC and Shimkin are equipped with two wireless networks, SternOnTheMove and SternOnTheMoveSecure. Tisch is currently only equipped with SternOnTheMove. Both require web authentication though SternOnTheMoveSecure allows users to download small client to manage these credentials. When users are within range of our SternOnTheMoveSecure network, they will automatically be authenticated and will be less likely to experience any wireless disconnects.

Blackboard

Blackboard serves as Stern’s course management system. Students can access Blackboard for all course materials including class recordings (classes are recorded only at the request of the course instructor). Recordings will be made available within 24 hours of each class.

Printing

Printing is available through all student areas. Please see our printing guide for a complete list of all printing locations. As part of the Stern Campus Greening Initiative, students have been given 1,500 sheets of free printing, credited as 1500.00 Sternbucks. 1 Sternbuck= 1 sheet. Sternbucks are not transferrable or refundable. Additional pages may be purchased. Sheets remaining at the end of a school year may not be transferred over the next academic year.

Apps@Stern

Software required for courses are available to students at http://apps.stern.nyu.edu. This service is based on Citrix infrastructure.

Other Important Web Services

SIMON- Stern Internet account Manager
SIMON provides single entry to several Stern provided web services. Students may create vacation messages, forward additional email accounts and change and update password settings. Please be sure to visit SIMON to learn the full scope of services provided.

Enterprise Information System, EIS (formally AIS)
EIS is a database for all student related information. Student grades, addresses, courses, directories can all be found on EIS.
