Stern Welcomes New CIO

Stern is pleased to announce that Anand Padmanabhan has joined Stern as CIO. Anand joins Stern from CUNY’s Hunter College where he served as CIO. Anand has also served as CIO for Tennessee State University and Seton Hill University. We are confident that Anand's leadership will help Stern to move to the next level of excellence in technology.

Simon Redesigned

Simon, Stern's account management system has been redesigned. The new SIMON is easier to use and has new and improved features.

After logging in to Simon, you will see a personalized screen with information about your account, including a graph of your mail disk space usage as well as any items on your personal calendar. A Quicklinks box now contains links to frequently used applications, which, when accessed through SIMON will no longer require you to sign in again.

The Stern directory search includes the ability to search for departments as well as individuals. Pictures are available for faculty, staff and administrators at Stern, along with a downloadable Vcard of the individual's information. Additional information about Faculty members is provided through integration with the Stern Faculty Index. Access Faculty information from the "more info" link that appears below their name.

Workstation Relocations

The UC70 space has been converted from a computer lab space into a multi-purpose student lounge/study space. The workstations and printers formerly located in UC70 have been relocated to other areas for student usage. Specifically, workstations have been added to the following locations: 8 PC’s and 2 printers to alcove outside OCD office on 5th Floor, 8 PC’s and 2 printers to 4-130 suite, and 4 PC’s and an additional printer to Bloomberg room on 2nd floor inside the Nyman Family Reading Room. In several areas, seated workspace has been added to better accomodate notebook computer usage. Printers have been added to several areas in ensure printer reducancy in the event of a printer jam or failure on one of the printers.

Printer Changes

MBA2 students should be aware that many printer changes have occured over the summer break. Printer have been moved, replaced and sometimes, renamed. Returning students will need to update their Iprint software (the system should prompt you to update) and may also need to delete and reinstall printers to ensure you have the correct printers and most recent printer drivers. If you need assistance with this process, please visit the Helpdesk in Tisch Hall UC-49.

Auxillary Helpdesk

To help new and returning students get set-up for Stern technology resources, Stern will offer an auxillary Helpdesk from September 5th, 2006 - September 21, 2006, Mondays - Thursdays from 11:00am - 2:00pm. The auxillary Helpdesk will be located in the 3rd Floor rotunda lounge area.

Web Address Change

In a few weeks, the URL or web address for MBA student and club accounts will change. The new webaddress will eliminate the ~ character. A current web address has the following format: http://pages.stern.nyu.edu/~NetID. The new web address will eliminate the ~ sign to increase user-friendliness: http://pages.stern.nyu.edu/NetID. Other than the web address, nothing else about your webpages will change. Sales.stern.nyu.edu will still house the webpages and be used for WinSCP and Dreamweaver web page file transfers.

The old style web addresses, with the ~ sign included will remain working until May 2007 to allow time to update bookmarks, weblinks, etc. Please change any references to personal or club webpages to the new-style addresses.

The exact date and time the new addresses will become active will be communicated in a follow-up message.

Enter Your Own Helpdesk Tickets

Students may now enter their own helpdesk tickets through a web-based interface. To enter your own ticket, type helpdesk into the URL bar of a browser on campus or visit this link from off-campus. Login with your Stern NetID and password and you will be given the option to create a new ticket or view your open and/or closed Helpdesk requests. When you open a new ticket, the system will assign you a ticket number and enter your request into the ticket queue. Please note that we do not have 24-hour helpdesk service, so tickets entered after helpdesk hours will be addressed during the next helpdesk open hours (see below for Helpdesk hours). A how-to-guide on the new system is also available.

Security Reminders

Microsoft recently released critical updates for Windows. If you do not have Automatic Updates enabled on your computer, please go to the Windows Update site as soon as possible to download these new updates. To do so, launch Internet Explorer, click on the Tools menu and select Windows Update. Keeping your system updated with the latest security releases helps to keep your PC safe from viruses and hackers!

Phishing schemes continue to plague Internet users and to target both large, well-known and lesser-known financial services institutions and e-commerce sites. Be very cautious about clicking on links embedded in email messages and be wary of messages asking you to confirm your account information. When in doubt, check with your financial service institution or other company before clicking on links in email messages. Such links often take you to sites of cybercrimnals seeking to gain access to your personal information. In addition, the sites often contain malicious software that may infect your computer.

Keep up-to-date with security alerts and find security-related how-to-guides in the Security Central section of the IT website.
