Microsoft is planning to release a critical Security Update for Internet Explorer today. The security update fixes a flaw in Internet Explorer that is currently being actively exploited on NYU's network. For this reason, we recommend all Internet Explorer uses install the security update as soon as it becomes available.

Reports are beginning to surface that the recently-announced exploit against Adobe Reader 8 and Adobe Acrobat 8 is being exploited in the wild. Affected versions include Adobe Reader 8.1.2 and earlier and Acrobat Pro, 3d and Std 8.1.2 and earlier.
Adobe recommends upgrading to Acrobat/Reader 9 or 8.1.3, which are not vulnerable. We highly recommend that you do this on affected systems as soon as possible. For technical information about this vulnerability, consult the following Adobe webpage.

Microsoft has issued an emergency security update to address a critical
vulnerability in all supported versions of Windows. We expect attackers
to exploit this vulnerability as early as October 28th, 2008. Stern IT
asks that you patch your PC today.
To patch your pc, please run Windows Update. Windows Update can be run by going to Start -> All
Programs-> Windows Update. Install all recommended updates that appear. You may be asked to
reboot your system so please close any open applications before performing the update.

A new phishing scam has been circulating around Stern. This version has an attachment with a .zip extension and a subject line of "Journalist shot in Georgia" or "Brittney Spears Confession..." Be wary of any unsolicited emails, especially those with urgent appeals of any kind. When in doubt, delete the email.
