Notebook Computer Requirement

Notebook Computer Requirement and Recommendations for 2009-2010

All full and part-time MBA students and incoming undergraduate students are required to have a notebook computer.

The notebook requirement ensures that you will have access to the resources needed to successfully complete Stern's program of study.

If you will be purchasing a notebook for your time at Stern, we offer a Stern notebook in partnership with Dell.  If you already own a notebook computer, or choose to select another model, please be sure that it meets our Recommended Configuration.

The type of notebook you choose will determine the level of support you receive from Stern IT. 

Computers meeting the Recommended Configuration and Mac computers will receive Basic support.  Stern Dell notebooks will receive Advanced Support.

Support

Support for the wireless network and notebook computing is provided by our HelpDesk, located in KMC UC-120. The level of support will depend on the notebook. Basic support will be provided for the Stern Mac models listed above with Parallels Desktop and Microsoft Vista Business Edition. Basic support will be provided for notebooks meeting our recommend configuration requirements. Advanced support will be provided for the Stern Dell Notebook.

Basic Support

Students with a notebook meeting the Minimum Configuration will receive Basic Support.  Basic Support provides "best-effort" assistance to access basic Stern resources including webmail, wireless network, web applications and printing to Stern printers.  Access to advanced Stern services including POP or IMAP email and software-on-demand are not guaranteed and may depend on the condition of the computer and its components.  The quality of the wireless access depends on the quality and condition of the wireless card. Stern will not provide hardware assistance, including assistance to repair broken, disabled or faulty computers or computer components.

Advanced Support

Students who purchase a Stern Recommended Dell Laptop (detailed above) will receive Advanced Support. Advanced Support provides assistance to access all Stern resources including: webmail, Outlook desktop mail, wireless network, printing, software-on-demand, and web applications.   Troubleshooting of Stern supported software will be provided.  Stern IT will provide troubleshooting assistance and coordinate with Dell to provide hardware support should a hardware component in the notebook fail.  In the event that the laptop experiences critical software failures, Stern IT will assist in restoring the laptop to the original factory software installation.

What level of support will your vendor provide?

Hardware components sometimes fail in notebook computers.  If you have a Stern Recommended Dell notebook, we will be able to help you get the problem solved.  If you are planning to purchase a different laptop, be sure to ask about their service and support warranty.  Some vendors provide on-site, next business day support while others provide mail-in support that may result in a three-week, or longer, turnaround period.  You may have the option to purchase premium level support, which is recommended, as you will be relying heavily on your notebook to complete your coursework and assignments.

Wireless Mobile

Stern has an 802.11b/g wireless network that covers student areas in Tisch Hall and the Kaufman Management Center. Current notebooks come with 802.11b/g wireless capability built in.

Wireless Policy Statement

The wireless network is subject to greater security restrictions that the wired network. Chat services and non-Stern POP or IMAP email are not allowed on the wireless network. Click here for a complete technical list of accessible wireless ports.
