Abstract Text:

The present studies examined the reactions of both lower status and higher status parties to their exchanges with one another. The favorability of the outcome of the exchange along with the other party’s procedural fairness interacted to influence the desire of both parties to have future exchanges with one another. However, the nature of the interactive relationship between outcome favorability and procedural fairness differed considerably among the lower status and higher status parties. The results of a pilot study as well as two full-scale studies showed that among the lower status people, high procedural fairness reduced the positive relationship between outcome favorability and their desire for future exchanges with the higher status other, relative to when procedural fairness was low. Among the higher status people, high procedural fairness heightened the positive relationship between outcome favorability and their desire for future exchanges with the lower status other, relative to when procedural fairness was low. We discuss the theoretical and practical implications of these findings for the literatures on relationships in work organizations, organizational justice, and status.
