Abstract Text:

This paper looks at predictors of performance for Internet related startups before and after the NASDAQ crash in April 2000. It is argued that the stock market crash marked a switch from an environment characterized by resource munificence to one characterized by resource scarcity and predictors of performance will be different for these two different types of environments. We focus on two sets of predictors: institutional linkages and top management characteristics and study their differential effects under different environmental conditions. We find mixed support for our hypotheses.
