Title: Sometimes You’ve Got To Break The Rules:
Prosocial Rule Breaking At Work
Author(s):

Elizabeth W. Morrison

Abstract Text:

Rule breaking has typically been viewed as self-interested or malevolent behavior that is organizationally harmful. This paper presents a broader view of rule breaking by arguing that rule breaking is sometimes driven by prosocial motives, or the desire to do something positive. This paper not only builds an argument in support of the idea that rule breaking is sometimes prosocial, but also identifies several individual and organizational factors that may help to explain this behavior.
