Our Doctoral Program

The doctoral program in management offers student an opportunity to pursue study with one of the leading management faculties in the world. The program helps a student learn to conduct original research about management-related topics and to teach undergraduate and graduate business students. Our program provides exceptional preparation for a career as a professor in a top-ranked business school. Our students teach at many of the leading business schools in the world.

Our program prides itself on providing students with both breadth and depth in the field of management. Doctoral students will be exposed to the primary intellectual disciplines that inform management scholars. To provide depth, students will be expected to choose a specialty in either Organizational Behavior, Organizational Theory, or Strategy.

Our program offers several advantages over competing schools:

  • Worldclass Faculty. In a recent survey, Stern's Management Department was ranked fourth world-wide in terms of research productivity. Our faculty publish in and serve on editorial boards of all the leading management journals.

  • Breadth & Diversity. Because of the size of our faculty, we are able to offer a wide array of expertise across the broad research domain of management. With over thirty full-time professors, you are likely to find someone to mentor you no matter what your area of interest.

  • Living Laboratory. As the center of international commerce, New York City offers amazing opportunities for conversing with managers and studying business organizations. Research opportunities abound right outside our door.

The primary requirements for graduation are the completion of a thorough course of study, a comprehensive examination with both oral and written components, a second year research paper, and a dissertation that covers a management topic based on a strong theoretical and methodological approach.

The doctoral program in management is a full-time program. Doctoral students are expected to have full-time status, to participate in research projects conducted by management faculty, to participate in the department's research seminars, and to present research seminars. Students will receive full funding for five years guaranteed.
