What Makes a Course Intellectually Challenging?

What constitutes an intellectual challenge? What can we do to ensure students are appropriately challenged? What can we do to support students that will encourage their growth? Join us to learn more about how you can design and teach an appropriately challenging course.

The overwhelming consensus of learning research is that deep understanding comes when learners can transfer what they have learned to new and sometimes confusing settings (Bransford et al., How People Learn; Wiske, Teaching for Understanding). Accordingly this session is designed to help you assess the transfer demand (the degree of challenge) and teach in a way that promotes appropriate transfer to relevant situations. We will provide a brief presentation and handout on transfer and how to promote it, and we will spend time discussing how you can design transfer tasks and teach in such a way that students will be supported to master the important performance demands in your field.
