Stern Around the World: Abu Dhabi

MULT-UB 45 The Middle East: Cultures, Markets, and Strategies


As a student in this Spring 2015 semester course, you will take a trip to Abu Dhabi in January 2015. Here you will examine key cultural, economic, political, and social structures and trends in the Middle East, and assess their implications for business strategies. Dates and an itinerary have not yet been set for this course, check back in the fall for complete details.

OFFICE: 901 Tisch Hall
  • This course is open to Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors who apply and are accepted into the program.
    Additionally, students must meet the following prerequisites:
    • Minimum 3.0 GPA (study abroad requirement)
    • Must be enrolled at Stern in New York City for the Spring 2015 semester
    • Seniors who plan to graduate in January are not eligible
  • This course can count as a Global Business elective or a Stern elective.

MULT-UB 45 The Middle East: Culture, Markets and Strategies, is designed as an introduction to the Middle East, with a special focus on the Arabian Gulf (GCC) countries. It will examine key cultural, economic, political, and social structures in the region, and their implication for business strategies. The trip to Abu Dhabi will be used as a context to examine special topics that are relevant to the region. Some examples of topics that would be covered include sovereign wealth funds, the geopolitics of oil and renewable energy, Islam and Islamic finance, cultural issues, demographic and consumption patterns, and entrepreneurship. The topics will be covered through lectures, discussions, guest lectures, company visits, cultural excursions, and projects.


An application is required and includes submission of a brief essay and your passport information. The application deadline for the January 2014 course and trip has passed.

Travel Details

Students must check in to the Abu Dhabi residence hall on Sunday, January 5th or Monday, January 6th and stay through the end of the program on the evening of Thursday, January 16th. Students will arrange their own flights to and from Abu Dhabi.

Trip to Abu Dhabi
These dates include arrival on 1/5, classes and non-academic programming in Abu Dhabi, and return to New York on 1/17.
**Students will arrange their own flights to and from Abu Dhabi. Students must check in with a Stern chaperone at 1 pm on Monday, January 6th and stay through the end of the program the evening of Thursday, January 16th.

Friday, February 7

1:00pm-4:00pm- Final exam, class discussion, and debriefing. (Tisch UC-24)


Estimated Expenses

Please note: Although you will register for this 3-credit course as part of your Spring 2014 schedule, NYU tuition and registration fees do not cover the additional fee for the trip to Abu Dhabi.

A Trip Program Fee in the amount of $1,500 will be required of all participants. The trip fee will cover:
  • NYU Student Housing and Meal Plan for 13 days
  • Group excursions, including transportation

Additional Expenses to be covered by student (not included in Trip Fee):
  • Airfare (approx. $1,200 - $1,800 - students will make their own flight arrangements.)
  • Visa fees (if applicable)
  • Course materials (approx. $30)
  • Personal expenses & entertainment
**Limited need-based stipends are available for qualified students. Students can apply for the stipend via the online application.

Need-based Travel Stipends

A limited number of travel stipends will be available for students who qualify. Students can apply via the online application. You must have an updated FAFSA on file with NYU to be considered for this stipend.

Passport & Visa Requirements for all Participants

Passports: You must have a passport valid for a minimum of six months - through July 2014 - to travel. More information on how to renew or obtain a passport can be found on the U.S. Department of State's website.

Tourist visas: Americans with U.S passports (tourist passports) valid for more than six months beyond the dates of travel do not need a visa to enter Abu Dhabi if the duration of stay is less than one month. This includes U.S. citizens with visas or entry stamps from other countries. If you are not a U.S. citizen, please consult UAE's visa requirements. Students needing visas to travel will work directly with NYU Abu Dhabi staff to obtain the appropriate visa paperwork, rather than going to the UAE Consulate.

Note: It is the student's responsibility to apply and receive the appropriate visas for their passports in a timely manner for the trip. Refunds are not provided for those students who fail to secure their visas.
