The Board Fellows program provides a way for resource-constrained organizations to access valuable business skills and fresh insights.

Some of the benefits for participating organizations include:
  • Connect with talented business leaders who can provide new perspective and input to board decisions
  • Build relationships with potential candidates for future board and staff positions
  • Participants in development of future business and community leaders while cultivating their interest in community involvement
  • Gain access to students’ knowledge and skills in a project that benefits the organization.

We would expect the hosting organization to dedicate time to helping the student learn from this unique experience. To ensure a successful experience:
  • Select a member of the Board or the Executive Director to serve as the student’s primary contact or mentor
  • Help student develop an understanding of the nonprofit’s goals and challenges
  • Invite student to full and advisory board meetings and introduce Fellow to other Board members
  • Work with student to identify a project that can be meaningfully completed between September and May that utilizes the student’s business skills
  • Provide data or other information needed for the Board Fellow to complete the project
  • Organize for the student to present final project deliverable results to board or staff where applicable.

New York Initiatives is currently partnered with the Center for Anti-Violence Education, Doug Varone & Dancers (DOVA), The Fresh Air Fund, Global Nomads Group, Grown NYC , Housing+Solutions, National Academy Foundation, NYC Academies, Step-Up Women's Network , and Volunteers of America.
