Excerpt from [Slate](http://www.slate.com/blogs/moneybox/2014/07/23/ceo_pay_for_performance_this_graph_shows_why_it_s_a_sham.html) -- "A 2008 paper by [Xavier Gabaix](http://www.stern.nyu.edu/faculty/bio/xavier-gabaix) and Augustin Landier concluded that the entire 'six-fold increase of U.S. CEO pay between 1980 and 2003 can be fully attributed to the six-fold increase in market capitalization of large companies during that period.'"
