# Professor Nicholas Economides notes that the current market between Big Tech companies and their users on acquisition of personal data does not function properly

Excerpt from [JumpStartMag](https://www.jumpstartmag.com/should-big-tech-be-broken-up/) -- “'Under present antitrust law, breakups and other structural remedies can only be imposed when there is proof of extreme violations of antitrust law,' says [Economides](https://www.stern.nyu.edu/faculty/bio/nicholas-economides). 'At present, we do not have well-defined violations. We are really far away from establishing extreme violations of antitrust law for which a \[breakup\] would be appropriate.'"
