MULT-UB 45 The Middle East: Culture, Markets and Strategies, is designed as an introduction to the Middle East, with a special focus on the Arabian Gulf (GCC) countries. It will examine key cultural, economic, political, and social structures in the region, and their implication for business strategies. The trip to Abu Dhabi will be used as a context to examine special topics that are relevant to the region. Some examples of topics that would be covered include sovereign wealth funds, the geopolitics of oil and renewable energy, Islam and Islamic finance, cultural issues, demographic and consumption patterns, and entrepreneurship. The topics will be covered through lectures, discussions, guest lectures, company visits, cultural excursions, and projects.
This course is open to NYU Stern juniors and seniors who apply and are accepted into the program. If you are interested in applying you must also meet the following prerequisites:
- Minimum 3.0 GPA (study abroad requirement).
- Must be enrolled at Stern in New York City for the spring semester immediately following the January trip
- Seniors who plan to graduate in January are not eligible.
- Attending or viewing an Info Session is highly encouraged before applying
This 3-credit course can count towards:
- Global Business elective
- Marketing elective
- General Stern elective
The application will become available in late summer and the deadline will be in September 2021. To apply you must complete the application and also email the NYU Stern Abu Dhabi Team with a digital color copy of your passport, digital color copy of both sides of your NYU ID and your resume.
If you are accepted into the program, you will need to arrange your own flights to and from Abu Dhabi. You will also be required to check in to the Abu Dhabi residence hall at the official start of the program and stay through the official end of the program.

The Stern Abu Dhabi team will take care of your registration for this class. Please make a note of the deadline to file a Pass/Fail option for this course.
Mandatory trip pre-departure session.
The official trip dates will include Abu Dhabi arrival and orientation, classes, cultural programming, and departure from Abu Dhabi.
Required trip debrief session in New York.
Please note: Although you will be registered for this 3-credit course as part of your spring schedule, NYU tuition and registration do not cover the additional fees for the trip to Abu Dhabi.

Need-Based Travel Scholarships
NYU Stern is pleased to offer a limited number of scholarships to participants who have demonstrated financial need. Scholarship award amounts vary, and are to help cover the program fee cost. However, scholarship amounts do not cover flight costs or additional costs not covered by the program fee. In order to be eligible, you must have an updated FAFSA or CSS Profile on file at NYU. You can apply for a travel scholarship via the application.
Passport and Visa Requirements for All Participants
Passports: You must have a passport valid for a minimum of six months after your dates of travel. For this trip that means your passport cannot expire before the end of July 2022. More information on how to renew or obtain a U.S. passport can be found on the U.S. Department of State's website. If you are an international student please contact your Ministry of Foreign Affairs. All NYU students are welcome to contact the NYU Office of Global Services (OGS) for assistance as well.
Tourist visas: If you are accepted it will be your responsibility to apply and receive the appropriate visa in a timely manner for the trip. Refunds are not provided if you fail to secure your visa.
- U.S. citizens with passports valid for more than six months beyond the dates of travel do not need a visa to enter Abu Dhabi if the duration of stay is less than one month. This includes U.S. citizens with visas or entry stamps from other countries.
- If you are not a U.S. citizen, please consult UAE's visa requirements. If you do need a visa to travel, you will work directly with the Stern Abu Dhabi team and the NYU Abu Dhabi staff to obtain the appropriate visa paperwork, rather than going to the UAE Consulate. Detailed information on the visa application process will be provided once you are admitted into the program. Please note that the UAE visa cost is estimated to be approximately $357.00 USD.
