## FAFSA Process

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is an online form that is filled out annually by both prospective and current students to determine eligibility for federal student loans.

The [**FAFSA**](https://studentaid.gov/) is required for federal financial aid consideration for students who are U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and eligible non-citizens.

1. Electronically complete the FAFSA form online. Do this as soon as possible to ensure approval of federal loans in time for registration and payment deadlines.
2. Include **002785 as the Title IV code for New York University**. This code enables the school to view your FAFSA information.
3. After your FAFSA is submitted and processed, you can access your FAFSA Submission Summary, which summarizes the information you reported on your FAFSA form. You’ll receive an email when your FAFSA Submission Summary is available to view online in your StudentAid.gov dashboard.
4. NYU receives the FAFSA information electronically. However, the school only reviews and offers federal loans for enrolled students (who have submitted their deposit) and current students.
5. Award notices are emailed to your Stern account approximately one month before your payment deadline. You will then be directed to [**NYU Albert**](http://albert.nyu.edu), the university-wide system, where you will review and accept your federal student loans.
6. Secure your loans at [**studentaid.gov**](http://studentaid.gov) where you will electronically sign your Master Promissory Note(s) and complete online Entrance Counseling.
7. Please keep in mind that the [**disbursement**](http://www.stern.nyu.edu/portal-partners/financial-aid/loans/disbursements-refunds) of federal loan funds will occur approximately 10 days before a students' first day of class (provided all required steps have been completed by the billing due date). Please check your individual class schedule to determine when your loans will disburse as every student may have different disbursement dates. Therefore, we advise that you budget your finances per semester, accordingly.
8. Renew the FAFSA for each academic year in which you wish to receive federal loans.
