National Science Foundation Grant Awarded to Professor Nicholas Economides to Support Research on Fifth-Generation Phone Networks

Nicholas Economides
Nicholas Economides, NYU Stern Professor of Economics, and co-investigators Sundeep Rangan and Elza Erkip of NYU Polytechnic School of Engineering were awarded a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant totaling $750,000. This four-year grant will provide funding for the team’s research on fifth-generation wireless phone networks. The proliferation of wireless data services (such as video downloading) has created a tremendous demand for bandwidth that traditional wireless networks cannot meet. To solve this problem, this research will focus on the creation and management of wireless telecommunication networks that will use the available vast but lower quality electromagnetic spectrum. The authors of the research expect that, based on the results of the study, there will rapid deployment of the new network and new wireless phones utilizing it.
