NYU Stern Welcomes Inaugural Class of Masters in Business Analytics

New Degree Program Offers Innovative Methodologies to Support Data-Driven Decision-Making

New York University Stern School of Business today welcomes to its New York campus the inaugural class of the Master of Science in Business Analytics program. The MS in Business Analytics is the first accredited graduate-level program in business analytics to be offered by a leading business school. It exposes students to innovative methodologies that support data-driven decision-making, and will equip graduates with the ability to transform data into a powerful and predictive strategic asset to ultimately drive better business results.

“With this program, we have added another innovative degree to NYU Stern’s portfolio of global programs, one that not only responds to a critical business need, but also provides an innovative delivery model that brings it to a wider, global audience.”

Designed to accommodate the schedules of working executives, the program is taught in five modules spanning one year, rotating between NYU Stern’s Greenwich Village campus in New York and the University’s Shanghai campus. Faculty are drawn from NYU Stern’s top-ranked Information, Operations & Management Sciences and Marketing departments.

The inaugural class is composed of 60 students with an average of 11 years of work experience in a wide range of industries, from healthcare to manufacturing to venture capital, at small companies as well as large international corporations such as American Express, Bloomberg, Ford Motor Company, Google, IBM, Microsoft, United Health Group and the US Federal Reserve Bank. The students come from 19 countries, from Argentina to Zimbabwe.

“The program answers a growing business need for trained experts in business analytics,” said Eitan Zemel, Dean of Business and Engineering at NYU Shanghai and Vice Dean for Global and Executive Programs at NYU Stern. “It brings together the five critical skills we believe are essential for success in this area, namely the expertise to acquire and manage data, the facility to work with models and algorithms, the mastery of business systems and processes, the sensitivity to broad societal contexts and issues of privacy, and a mind-set geared towards innovation.”

Under the academic leadership of Harry Chernoff, Clinical Professor of Information, Operations & Management Sciences, the program gives students the opportunity to tackle real life, real-time projects that address strategic needs within their own companies. These projects, brought forward by students, serve as a focal point throughout the program, enabling students to apply classroom insights to the business problems that matter to them.

“Global Programs at Stern are incubators for innovation in pedagogy and delivery,” said Zemel. “With this program, we have added another innovative degree to NYU Stern’s portfolio of global programs, one that not only responds to a critical business need, but also provides an innovative delivery model that brings it to a wider, global audience.” NYU Stern also offers an MS in Risk Management, an MS in Global Finance with Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and the TRIUM Global Executive MBA, a joint program with the London School of Economics and HEC Paris.
