MGMT-UB ___: The Business of Work: Fur Trade & Fair (?) Trade to AI | Explore the 400 year period that brought the United States of America from a colonized nation to one of the largest global trading powers in the world.

Stern Around the World in the USA - FALL 2024

This course takes an historical approach to understanding workers as core to any successful business.  Instead of looking at business from the point of view of balance sheets and economic trends, this course looks at the human impact of contracting a person to do work. It examines the importance of understanding not just Herzberg's hierarchy of needs, but the full relationship that is created when a person is employed to carry out a business's mission, vision and goals.  It looks specifically at the contract between laborer and employer, as well as the impact to the local and global community.

This Fall 2024 semester course takes place in New York and includes a domestic trip over Fall Break. From the afternoon of Thursday, October 10, to the evening of Monday, October 14, 2024, you will take a class trip to Milwaukee, Wisconsin & Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Some of the core topics will include:

  • the early Native American fur traders and their relationship with the Jesuit missionaries

  • the Indian Wars that pushed the Native American fur trader to reservations

  • the rapid expansion of the cotton and sugar industries that depended exclusively on slave labor and brought the USA to a global power

  • the impact of immigrant labor on farms in the Midwest that produced the bread basket of the world

  • the impact of Chinese immigrants that built the railroads

  • the history of the auto industry from the unrepresented assembly line worker to unionization

  • the service industries contracts for a minimum wage versus a livable wage

  • AI and the impact on creative ownership
