The Ross Institute's History

In 1971, Vincent C. Ross established and endowed this institute.  His goal was to create an environment where research would flourish and where executives, professional accountants, lawyers, government regulators, and academics could work together to advance cutting-edge research in accounting, sustainability and finance.  Over the years, The Vincent C. Ross Institute has sponsored many initiatives including:
  • Organizing and sponsoring programs and events to facilitate the exchange of information and ideas between the business and academic communities, including distinguished lectures, executive education programs, and professional conferences and roundtables
  • Actively cooperating with other institutions to develop research, programs, and events, including the NYU Center for Law and Business, the NYU Law School, the Stern Volatility and Risk Institute, and outside organizations such as the Brookings Institution, the Big Four Accounting firms, and regulatory bodies such as the Financial Accounting Standards Board
  • Maintaining a research library for all Stern School faculty and Ph.D. students interested in accounting, finance, economics, management decision making, and taxation.  The library houses a unique collection of historical corporate annual reports
  • Funding scholarships for Stern students

Members of the Accounting Department have served as the Director of the Ross Institute since its founding in 1971.  Former directors are:  Joshua Ronen, Baruch Lev, and Paul Zarowin.  Each Director has placed a unique stamp upon the Institute in the forms of establishing new academic journals, agenda, conferences, roundtables, audiences, and scholarships.  Currently, the Ross sponsors a summer research camp in which current and former Stern faculty and Stern Ph.D. students interact with outside academics.  In 2022, we will begin sponsoring a 4-Schools yearly accounting research conference, in which NYU Stern will be joined by the Columbia Business School, the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, and the Yale School of Management at Yale University.
