The Line Between Disrupt and Exploit

As much as we like to herald "disruptive thinking" as a sign of innovation, brilliance, and progress, Professor Sonia Marciano reminds us to take a step back to Porter's Five Forces to examine the concepts of industries, competition, and substitutes. When something is "disruptive," is value really being created, or is it just being redistributed, and perhaps in ways more skewed than ever before? Is the method of "disruption" a true innovation or is it a disguised form of free-riding? Simply, is it disruptive or is it exploitative?
