Professor Sinan Aral Named PopTech Science Fellow

Sinan Aral, Assistant Professor of Information, Operations and Management Sciences, has been selected as a 2010 PopTech Science Fellow.
Sinan Aral, Assistant Professor of Information, Operations and Management Sciences, has been selected as a 2010 PopTech Science Fellow. Professor Aral joins a handful of other extremely high potential, socially engaged working scientists who view science as an essential way of thinking, discovering, understanding and deciding, and who can effectively communicate their work and its importance to the public.
“I am honored to have been nominated and chosen as a PopTech Science Fellow this year,” said Professor Sinan Aral. “It is great to join these diverse thinkers to promote science as a solution for some of the world’s toughest problems. Making scientific thinking a primary tool in public policy and public discourse is essential to the real world practical applications of our research. I am thrilled to be part of it.”
The Fellows will receive leadership development training, ongoing guidance and mentoring, and access to a peer and policy network. They will be invited to participate in the PopTech 2010 Conference at the end of October. PopTech is supported by sponsors including Microsoft Research, Intel and the National Science Foundation.
Professor Aral studies how behavioral contagions spread through social networks—from products to productivity to public health. He has been previously named a Microsoft Faculty Fellow, awarded a $475,000 NSF CAREER Award, as well as a 2009 IBM Faculty Award. Sinan’s work shows how emerging new technologies and modes of communication have a profound impact on economies and society.
