Biography

Brian Hanssen is the Director of NYU Stern’s Management Communication (MCOM) Program and a Clinical Professor of Management Communication. He joined NYU Stern as an Adjunct Assistant Professor in 2009, served as a Visiting Associate Professor from 2015–2019, and joined the MCOM faculty full time in 2019. He teaches across the undergraduate, MBA, and Executive MBA programs in both New York and Shanghai.

Prior to academia, Professor Hanssen held a global management role at Intralinks, a leading provider of secure collaboration solutions, and has consulted extensively with organizations on the effective communication of enterprise-level change initiatives to diverse audiences. His work spans organizational restructuring, IT implementations, product enablement and adoption, and the development of corporate shared-value programs. Past clients include UBS, General Electric, Citi, TotalEnergies, and the Republic of Kenya.

Earlier in his career, Professor Hanssen worked in public education, serving as a high school teacher and administrator in both the Los Angeles Unified School District and the Compton Unified School District. These experiences continue to inform his approach to leadership, equity, and communication within complex institutions.

Professor Hanssen continues to consult in the private sector and has been recognized by Poets & Quants as one of its Favorite Business Professors in 2022 and 2023.

He holds degrees from the University of California, Los Angeles, and Columbia University.
