David K. Backus is the Heinz Riehl Professor of International Economics and Finance at New York University Stern School of Business. In his current positions, Professor Backus teaches courses in finance, economics and international business in NYU Stern's full-time and part-time MBA programs, as well as its doctoral program. He is also responsible for faculty recruitment and management.
Professor Backus has been with NYU Stern for more than 20 years. His primary research areas of interest include international business cycles, foreign exchange, fixed income securities and currency and interest rate derivatives. His work has appeared in numerous publications, including Journal of Political Economy, American Economic Review, Journal of Finance and Journal of Financial Economics. In addition to his research, Professor Backus has been recognized for his excellence in teaching and received the Citibank Excellence in Teaching Award in 1995 and Honorable Mention as MBA Teacher of the Year in 1993.
Before joining NYU Stern, Professor Backus served as an economist for the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis for two years. He has also held professorial positions at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada.
Professor Backus received his Bachelor of Arts in economics and chemistry from Hamilton College and his Doctor of Philosophy in economics from Yale University.
