Biography

David Purdy joined New York University Stern School of Business as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Management Communication in September 2012, after having been an adjunct professor since 2010. He teaches both MBA and undergraduate courses through Stern’s Management Communications Department, as well as facilitating seminars through Stern’s Executive Education program.

Professor Purdy draws on more than 25 years of experience and education in business and the arts as well as a life-long love of technology to help students, executives and entrepreneurs think and communicate more effectively both in person and online. Prior to joining Stern, he taught communications at Fordham University, Baruch College and the Mountbatten Institute, a Cambridge University accredited MBA program. He also taught Integrated Marketing Communications for the State University of New York (SUNY), encompassing advertising, public relations and social media. Professor Purdy also trains corporate clients and entrepreneurs through the American Management Association and his own firm, Big Blue Soapbox, offering communication skills, entrepreneurial planning and mediation training.

While communications is the thread running throughout his multifaceted career, Professor Purdy has also been a financial analyst, planner and manager, as well as a classically trained singer and actor. He has worked in a broad range of industries, including: public and investor relations, financial services, telecommunications, biotech, consumer and enterprise software, and private equity. Employers and clients have included Ruder Finn, Sprint, Verizon, Zurich Financial, Computron Software and Fannie Mae.

Professor Purdy received an education degree in music from Temple University and an M.B.A. in Finance from the University of Maryland. He also received three years of classical acting training at Studio Theatre Conservatory and has studied entrepreneurship through both the JumpStart and FastTrac programs at the Levin Institute.
