The following are frequently asked questions and answers about Stern’s Graduate Convocation and Undergraduate Baccalaureate ceremonies:
Q. What is the difference between Convocation, Baccalaureate and Commencement?

Graduate Convocation is for Stern MBA, PhD and MS candidates and their families and friends. The ceremony recognizes each student individually. Convocation takes place on Friday, May 22, 2020, at 3:00 pm at the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden.

Undergraduate Baccalaureate is for Stern BS and BPE candidates and their families and friends. The ceremony recognizes each student individually, and prizes for academic excellence and extracurricular achievement are announced. Baccalaureate takes place on Friday, May 22, 2020, at 10:00 am at the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden.

NYU Commencement invites all graduating students from each school to attend the ceremony to confirm their degree. This year, the ceremony will take place at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday, May 20, 2020, at 11:00 am.

Q. As a graduate student, what do I do if I do not receive an invitation for Stern's Graduate Convocation and/or NYU's All-University Commencement?

If you do not receive an invitation to Stern's Graduate Convocation by mid-April, first check your status for graduation eligibility with Stern's Office of Records and Registration. If you indeed meet the eligibility requirements and still do not receive an invitation, please e-mail GraduateConvocation@stern.nyu.edu.

If you do not receive an invitation to NYU's All-University Commencement in the mail by mid-April, verify your address with Stern's Office of Records and Registration

Q. As an undergraduate student, what do I do if I do not receive an invitation for Stern's Undergraduate Baccalaureate and NYU’s All-University Commencement?

If you do not receive an invitation via e-mail to Stern's Undergraduate Baccalaureate by early April, please e-mail ucose@stern​.nyu.edu.

If you do not receive an invitation to NYU's All-University Commencement in the mail by mid-April, first check your status for graduation eligibility with NYU's Registrar. You may also want to verify your address at the University Registrar's office located on the 1st floor at 25 West 4th Street.

Q. If I lose my name card can I still attend Stern’s Graduate Convocation or Undergraduate Baccalaureate?

You must have a candidate ticket/name card, and NYU ID in order to attend Graduate Convocation or Undergraduate Baccalaureate and have your name called on stage. If you are an undergraduate student and you have lost your name card, please e-mail ucose@stern.nyu.edu. A limited number of extra name cards will be available at the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden on the day of the ceremony.

Q. I forgot to order my attire online. What do I do?

If you miss the April 14 deadline, you must place and pick up a late order. All late orders must be paid by certified check, money order, credit card (Visa, MasterCard or Discover) or cash. The latter will speed up your transaction.  Please understand that the rental firm might have to make substitutions to fill late orders.

Q. Do my guests and I need tickets for Convocation or Baccalaureate, and if so, how do I obtain them?

Tickets are required for you and your guests at Stern’s Graduate Convocation ceremony on Friday, May 22, 2020, at the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden.  You must RSVP online for you and your guests in order to request tickets. Students will be given their candidate and guest tickets at ticket distribution (information will be posted soon).

Tickets are required for you and your guests to attend Stern's Undergraduate Baccalaureate ceremony on Friday, May 22, 2020 at the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden. You must RSVP in order to pick up your tickets (an email will be sent out to all undergraduate students with information on how to RSVP, request, and pick up tickets in late March).

Q. One of my guests attending the Convocation or Baccalaureate ceremony requires ADA seating. Will he/she be accommodated?

Q. How do I order copies of my graduation photograph that was taken at the Baccalaureate and Convocation ceremonies?

As a courtesy, a professional photographer from Island Photography will be taking photographs of each graduate as they are recognized during the ceremony.  Within two weeks of the ceremony, each graduate will be emailed a secure link and a PIN to view and order photos.  For questions related to photography, please contact Island Photography at 800-869-0908 or custserv@islandphoto.com. You can also visit their website at www.islandphoto.com. Purchase is optional.

Q. Where can I return my academic attire after graduation?

Academic attire is required for Stern Graduate Convocation, Undergraduate Baccalaureate and NYU All-University Commencement ceremonies, and the same attire should be used for both ceremonies.

You may return your academic attire immediately following Stern’s Graduate Convocation or Undergraduate Baccalaureate to the bins located outside the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden. 

Additionally, academic attire can be returned to the NYU Bookstore at 726 Broadway during the following hours:
  • Wednesday, May 20, 2020: 9:00 am - 7:00 pm
  • Thursday, May 21, 2020: 9:00 am - 7:00 pm
  • Friday, May 22, 2020: 9:00 am - 7:00 pm
  • Saturday, May 23, 2020: 10:00 am - 5:00 pm
  • Sunday, May 24, 2020: 11:00 am - 5:00 pm
  • Monday, May 25, 2020: 10:00 am - 5:00 pm
  • Tuesday, May 26, 2020: 9:00 am - 7:00 pm

Q. How do I obtain tickets to NYU All-University Commencement?

Tickets are required for NYU’s All-University Commencement. Students can order Commencement tickets online. Visit NYU’s All-University Commencement website for more information on tickets.


Q. When do I actually receive my diploma?

You will not receive your diploma at any of NYU’s graduation exercises. Diplomas will be mailed to candidates' permanent addresses by the University Registrar approximately eight weeks after graduation.
