Frequently Asked Questions

What are the requirements for Stern MBAs or Undergraduates to work as my TF?

Basic requirements:
  • Completed at least 9 credits at Stern
  • GPA of at least 3.3
  • Enrolled and remain enrolled in the semester in which the TF will be working
  • Taken the course or its equivalent, or have approval from the professor

What is the process for getting hired as a TF or GF?

Detailed instructions are on the contract. Please follow the link for the appropriate contract according to which semester you are applying.

How do I find the course number, credit load, and current enrollment for the course I will be a TF?

Please login into Student Web Information System (AIS) and follow the link on the left hand navigation bar to “department enrollments”.

Who should I contact with questions about my application?

Your first point of contact should be the Administrative Coordinator for the department in which you will be working. A list of all Admin Coordinators is here:

What is the amount of compensation?

Compensation for TF/GF positions ranges from $900 to $3600 per appointment. Payment is dependent on enrollment, course credit load, and other factors. Please see contract for more details.

Can a position be terminated?

Your employment is at will, which means that you or NYU can terminate your employment at any time, with or without cause. NYU can also withdraw or rescind this offer at any time prior to the commencement of work without restriction.

What if I am receiving student loans?

As these payments are considered tuition remission, Financial Aid will simply reduce the amount of your loans, or you will receive a reimbursement check from the Bursar’s Office. Contact Financial Aid at 212-998-0790 for more information.

Can I have more than one TF or GF position at the same time?

Yes; however, a student may not exceed 20 hours of work per week during the semester.

What are the rules for Summer positions?

Jobs are open to qualified NYU students and Stern May graduates, except for May graduates who are international students. You may work up to 1 full position (20 hours per week) per summer term which included Summer I,II,III.

Are all courses eligible for a full teaching fellowship?

Can a teaching fellow receive additional compensation for private tutoring?

No. Students may not make independent arrangements for additional compensation to tutor students in the class to which they are assigned as a TF. Petitions for exceptions to this policy must be accompanied by the following, submitted in writing by the instructor: (1) A complete description of the TF's responsibilities (2) A guarantee that the TF will not be engaged in any interpretive assessment of student work.

Can a student from a school other than NYU participate in this program?

Yes but only with approval from the department Administrative Coordinator and the Stern Dean’s Office.

What are the requirement to be a work as a TF or GF?

Basic requirement for both:
  • Completed at least 9 credits at Stern as a MBA student
  • GPA of at least 3.0
  • Enrolled and remain enrolled in the semester in which you will be working
     
Additional Requirement to work as a TF:
  • Taken the course or its equivalent, or have approval from the course professor
