Our Policies

We aim to create a consistent, fair process for all employers and to respect our students’ academic requirements and recruiting needs.

NYU Stern MBA Recruiting Policies

The intent of these recruiting policies is to ensure a great recruiting experience at NYU Stern. We recommend all recruiters share these policies with their school recruiting teams, interviewers, and hiring managers. Any violation of these policies may result in corrective action from the Careers team.

Please note that these policies apply to any organization recruiting a NYU Stern MBA student, whether the recruiting takes place on or off campus. For any questions, please contact the Careers team.

Academic Commitment

Our students’ first priority is class and all other academic requirements. Employers should plan all recruiting events and interviews around these commitments. The Stern Careers will help you identify dates and times that will avoid conflicts and optimize attendance at your events. Recruiting partners should provide reasonable alternatives to any situation where academic conflicts arise.

Full-Time Recruiting Policies

Interviews

  • Full-time interviews organized by NYU Stern begin Tuesday, September 26, 2023
  • NYU Stern has no restrictions on when firms can host full-time interviews
  • In order for students to balance academic commitments and overlapping interview requests, all companies must offer at least one alternate second round interview date
Please note: students are required to honor all first-round interview commitments and cannot cancel or reschedule them in order to attend second-round interviews. We ask that companies inform students of their status within one week of any interview. 

Offers
  • The Stern Careers team requires full-time offers extended after a summer internship remain open and fundamentally unchanged through Friday, November 10, 2023, to allow students to complete the recruitment process. 
  • Full-time offers extended to second-year students during the fall recruiting process must remain open and fundamentally unchanged through Friday, November 10, 2023 or for three weeks from the students’ receipt of a written offer, whichever comes later.
  • For full-time offers extended during the spring, we suggest a decision period of at least three weeks from the students’ receipt of a written offer to enable them to fully consider their decision.
  • Offer incentives, which encourage students to accept before the deadline, are permitted. These incentives should be small relative to the overall value and terms of the offer.

Summer Internship Recruiting Policies

Interviews

In order to give students adequate time to prepare for interviews and to ensure that all employers have equal access to students, no internship interviews are permitted between the start of MBA Orientation and the beginining of campus interviews, as outlined below. Exceptions may be allowed for certain international and regional offices outside of the New York City area. These exceptions must be approved by the Careers team.
  • First-round summer internship interviews for investment banking (in-person or virtual) and all other industries (virtual only) begin Thursday, January 4, 2024.
  • Second-round interviews for investment banking internships and first-round in-person interviews for internships in all other industries begin Monday, January 8, 2024.
  • We request that companies inform students of their status within one week of any interview.

Offers

  • Summer internship offers may not be extended before Wednesday, January 10, 2024 at 5pm EST. This policy is in place to support both students and employers, providing everyone with sufficient time to complete their recruiting processes before moving to the offer stage. Any offers for non-investment banking industries may be extended anytime after the completion of first-round interviews.
  • The Careers team requires that companies extending summer internship offers keep those offers open and fundamentally unchanged through Friday, February 9, 2024, or three weeks from the students’ receipt of a written offer, whichever comes later.
  • Offer incentives, which encourage students to accept before the deadline, are permitted. These incentives should be small relative to the overall value and terms of the offer.
  • Firms may not invite students to sell events or post-interview events until an offer has been extended.

 

Grade Disclosure Policy

Students are not permitted to include GPAs on NYU Stern resumes published and released by the Careers team. As Stern does not have an academic ranking system, which would offer context to the student's academic standing in the class, we discourage companies from requesting this information from students and using it as an evaluative measure during the recruiting process. On November 4, 2013, the full-time and joint-degree MBA students adopted a Grade Non-Disclosure Policy, while on February 20, 2015, the Langone MBA students adopted a similar Grade Non-Disclosure Policy. Rescinded Offers and Delayed Starts

Rescinding a verbal or written job offer, unless done under extenuating circumstances such as unforeseen business conditions or egregious student behavior, is a serious violation of NYU Stern Business School recruiting policy. Delayed start dates of an extended period may be considered rescinded offers as well. Sanctions against firms in violation of this policy will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Any organization considering rescinding an offer or delaying a start date should first contact their Relationship Manager.
 


 

Sanctions for Policy Infractions

Violations of NYU Stern’s recruiting policies will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. NYU Stern encourages our students to report noncompliance of recruiting policies. The Careers team will look into the situation and communicate with the employer. If the matter is not resolved, we will take corrective action, which may include:

  • Communication from the school to the senior management of the company informing them of the policy infraction
  • Restriction of the company’s access to students on campus
  • Exclusion of the company from on-campus recruiting activities
  • Inclusion on student-facing Employer Policy Non-compliance list
Just as we expect our employers to adhere to stated policies, we have also established a Recruiting Code of Conduct for our students. If you feel that students are behaving in an unprofessional manner, please reach out to your Relationship Manager.
 
 

Exceptions to Interview Policies

For international Recruiters:
 

We recognize that international companies or divisions of companies may need to recruit talent on US campuses in very specific timeframes. As a result, companies or divisions of companies based outside of the United States may interview and make offers to first- or second-year students outside of our regular recruiting calendar. We encourage you to keep the lines of communication open with candidates and work with them on key event and interview dates. Please note that our offer policies (e.g., decision deadlines) still apply.

National Career Conferences:

Career conferences—such as the National Black MBA Conference, Reaching Out MBA, Consortium, and the National Society of Hispanic MBAs Conference—are popular for recruiters and students. These events occur well in advance of the on-campus recruiting process for first-year students.  Early interviews for NYU Stern students are permitted for these events. Please note that our offer policies (e.g., decision deadlines) still apply.

Internship Programs Under The Fair Labor Standards Act

The NYU Stern Careers team believes that all students should receive compensation for their work. However, we acknowledge that some industries do not typically pay their interns, yet they still provide a meaningful learning experience. This fact sheet provides general information to help determine whether interns must be paid the minimum wage and overtime under the Fair Labor Standards Act for the services that they provide to “for-profit” private sector employers.
