Scholarships
All applicants (domestic and international) are considered for merit-based scholarships. Scholarships are typically in the amount of $10,000 or $20,000. Scholarships are applied evenly between the first and second semesters of the program, typically $5,000 or $10,000 for each semester. Approximately 25-35% of students receive a scholarship, though this amount can vary from year to year. No additional materials are required to be considered. If scholarships are an important consideration, we'd suggest applying for the November or February deadline, as funds are limited. Scholarship decisions are made at the time of admission and are included in your official admission letter. All scholarship decisions are final.

Additionally, the NYS Society of CPAs awards scholarships to deserving candidates entering the accounting profession. These scholarships are based heavily on financial aid and applicants must meet or exceed a threshold of acceptable academic performance.

Tuition assistance is available through non-NYU Stern entities offering accounting-specific scholarships. You are encouraged to conduct a search of non-NYU Stern opportunities. Useful search tools include the AICPA ‘This Way to CPA’ scholarship search.

Loan Programs

Domestic Students – Federal and Private Loans

U.S. citizens and U.S. permanent residents are eligible for federal loans. They also have the option to apply for private loans.

Federal Loans
The U.S. Department of Education offers both Federal Direct loans and Graduate PLUS loans.

Students must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to be reviewed for a Federal Direct Unsubsidized loan or Graduate Plus loan. Applicants are encouraged to submit their FAFSA as early as possible and should submit it no later than May of the calendar year they intend to start school. The FAFSA data determine your eligibility for the following:

Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan
Students are eligible for $10,250 per semester in the federal Direct Unsubsidized loan. This loan has an interest rate (effective for loans disbursed between July 1, 2022 and June 30, 2023) of 6.54% fixed with a loan origination fee of 1.057%, which is applied at disbursement.

Graduate PLUS Loans
In order to supplement the federal Direct Unsubsidized loan, domestic students are also eligible for the Graduate PLUS loan to help cover the full cost of attendance. This loan has an interest rate (effective for loans disbursed between July 1, 2022 and June 30, 2023) of 7.54% fixed with a loan origination fee of 4.228%, which is applied at disbursement.

More information on federal loan programs can be found on the Federal Loans page of the Stern Graduate Financial Aid website.

Private Loans
U.S. citizens and U.S. permanent residents may be eligible to receive private loans. A comprehensive list of current lenders typically used by Stern students can be found on the Private Loans page of the Stern Graduate Financial Aid website.

International Students – Private Loans
International students may be eligible to receive private student loans with and/or without a U.S. co-signer. For information on potential student loan opportunities, please review the Private Loan Options for International Students on the Stern Graduate Financial Aid website.
